According to the specs on the bike, the fule capacity should be 5 gallons. Today I hit reserve on the turnpike, and according to the mileage indicator, I had about 10 miles left before going dry. The yellow fuel icon was on, and I was a little nervous, since I never had it down that low before.
When I filled up, the bike took 3.9 gallons. I couldn't have squeezed more fuel into it if I had wanted to. If the bike hold 5 gallons, where is that other gallon hiding?
on the bright side, you will never run out of gas but thats how good the fuel guages are, mine has been the same as yours since new, they are never right
Quit using the miles to go feature.
Start setting your trip odometer at 0 when you fuel and start looking for a station around the 150-160 mark.
That gives you another 30-40 miles before you're on fumes.

that's about right.. my light comes on, and when I fill it up shortly after I only take between 3.9-4.2 gallons.. the gauges aren't very accurate, but my digital range meter is pretty close to what it should be
...but i do the math every time at the pump:
Milage/gallons replaced = mpg..
5*mpg = total range..and i subtract like 30-40 from that number and when i hit THAT number is when i look for a station.
I get a little antsy every time my fuel light comes on too. Then I get upset that I only fill up 3.5 gallons. The one time I filled it all the way up? The light came on, I rode it until the orange light came on, then finally filled up. 4.9 gallons. Too close for me to try it again, but it's unfortunate the lights aren't more consistent for me.
I figure after 180 miles, I need a station, just to be safe. I'm averaging 45-48 mpg and almost consistently get over 200 miles on a tank. The 'almost' part keeps me looking for gas at 180 though. I'll have to get used to not using the miles to go feature. I leave that on and I think that's what gives me anxiety when I ride.

My '07 has the same tank you have. When the low fuel light comes on I can count on about 40 + more miles in the tank. Mine means there' s about 1 gallon remaining and it usually takes 3.9 to 4.2 gallons to fill, my fuel gauge seems to be accurate. That 5 gallon capacity accounts for the presence of the fuel pump and filter in the tank...it's NET capacity.
