Here is my mpg history. My first tank of gas when the bike was brand new was disappointing. 33mpg. Ouch. My second tank of gas was much better 43 mpg. Respectable. My third tank of gas was nice. 50 mpg. My fourth tank of gas, which was pretty much country riding was insane. 60mpg. When I ride out in the burbs and shift early, then that's pretty much what I get 55-60mpg. In city traffic I will get 45-50 mpg depending on how bad it is. You got to love a stock sportster. 60 mpg and can keep up with a corvette.
IF you ride like your Granny, with no head wind or any other negative factors, you MIGHT get 50 mpg on the highway. Cars don't get anything like they are supposed to either. All testing is done in wind tunnels and other isolated rooms.
I ride it like I stole it. I love twisting the wick. So long as I get over 40 mpg, I am one happy UMF!
43 mpg around town? I wish! My 05 EFI Heritage (no mods) is right around 36 around town. Our highway mpg is real close. Solo I am at 45 mpg; with the wife (who weighs 110 pounds soaking wet) I am usually at 42 mpg. This is Indiana riding, fairly flat but usually breezy and I do like to twist the wick. I think besides the extra weight the engine has to move, another big factor is wind drag. On out Heritages, our passengers sit a lot higher up than we do. My wife tells me she feels like a bobble head back there some times. Punching a bigger hole in the wind has to decrease mpg.
Besides that, you have to slice through that dense, salty sea air down there in FL. Iâm sure that, like me, you would ride that pig if it got 5 mpg
