Default EFI Squeal

I have noticed the last couple of days when I turn on the ignition switch, and wait for the wngine light to go out before firing up the bike, the fuel pump (I assume that is what it is) makes a fairly loud squeal. I did not notice this as much till now. It may be getting louder, but I am not sure. Is this a sign that something is starting to go? Or is it as the service shop at the dealership say "it is normal"

In case you need it it is the 2001 Heritage with about 22,000 miles on it.

It should purr not squeal, so my vote would be "the child ain't right".

I have a newer bike and sometimes hear a similar sound. The sound is just the pump coming up to pressure. I say if your bike is running OK then I would ignore it unless it is really annoying.

I now have the "squeal" while engine is running and while riding. I filled up the tank this morning, and after the motor was running there was a fairly loud squeal. I believe it may be the fuel pump... anyway to test this, or how difficult is this to replace?

Any other thoughts?

It is 2001 Heritage, EFI, 26,000 miles....

Mine does it too every once in a while. I don't think it's the fuel pump, though. I think it's the idle actuator "finding its spot." Probably not healthy but it's still workin and I wouldnt know what to do to attempt to fix it.

Sure yours is the fuel pump?

No I am not sure it is the fuel pump, but was making sense? Yours does this and you have not had any problems?? I am concerned about it as tonight I am heading about 65 miles to a festival and then back.. I would really hate to be stranded if that is what it is! Any thoughts to ease my mind?

Every once in a while my 00 'King will make this pitiful sound during the powerup cycle. I am almost positive that it's the idle actuator.

I am assuming you're talkin about a fuel injected bike and since you said '01 that'd make it the old-style M-M injection, right? Not positive

but yeah...pretty damn sure that's where my "squeal" comes from, and it only happens very rarely. Can't pinpoint a pattern, and since everything's cool for now I haven't sweated it.

As for giving you the go-ahead...hell 65 miles aint nothin! I doubt you'll have a problem, but I wouldn't want to be the guy who said GO FOR IT only for you to come back later with a bummer story! Heh.

Why not drop by a wrench and cycle the ignition a few times in an effort to pinpoint the sound and see what they say?

That is my thought, I was going to see if I can get the local indy look at it and "repair" it. I have a tight schedule today, but also a hectic week schedule that I planed with the bike... Just a little bump in road at this time, but I hope it is nothing to time consuming! Will know more during the lunch hour as I plan to swap vehicles or take to indy to work with.

definitely post an update, cool? If it does turn out to be the idle actuator, i'd be curious what the fix is. Not sure if they're supposed to be lubed or somethin...
