whats up guys i just have a question i have a 04 standard it was pretty much stock when i got it but i just put an arlen ness big sucker air cleaner and short shot drag pipes i also put in the 89 sportster needle and a bigger jet in the carb the bike runs GREAT alot better performance wise i was actually shocked how much better it runs but when ridding it it sounds great when im getting on it but on deceleration it doesnt sound good at all when going down hill i get a little pop and crack but in between the pops and cracks it sounds like **** any help would be great thanks....
I wish I could help I had same trouble. After years of pissing me off I went with a 42mm HSR I paid 260 dollars it. What a change so easy to turn and a great HP gain
I have a 48 slow jet (was 45) it has the sporty needle ive tried every half turn from .5 to 3 turns out and the carb is deffenitly on the doughnut good because the air cleaner bolts to the jugs which forces the carb on the doughnut.
popping on decel is normally a lean condition. A bit more fuel will normally cure it. How to do that on a carb, I'm not sure, I'm more of a technology driven rider.
id take the sporty needle out. had an 05 88 superglide that i put a 48/190main 2turns out on mix screw and that thing ran great. similer set up to yours. i have heard that the sporty needle can cause backfireing. did you make sure your your exaust is sealed up tight?
could it possibly just be the pipes im using their the 200.00 dollar big growl snub nose(short shots) from j&p cycles i talked to my local dealership and they said if its running as good as it is theres probably nothing wrong with the setup they dont know why it would sound bad
it shouldnt be backfiring though. ive run stright pipes on almost all my evos and twincams and i almost never got any backfiring. although once and awhile my efi twinkie would but not alot. i still think its that needle or you need to put in new exaust gaskets at the heads.
You put a lot more air through the filter, and slightly more fuel (through the sporty needle (smaller needle I am guessing))
If you noticed you get more miles from the bike, and your bike feels hotter around your thighs, then odds are you are running wayyy too rich. not good for your engine nor power.
Try instead of changing the needle to change the Jet ..
The 'drag pipes' I am assuming are un-baffled and that should make the situation worse.

Those symptoms would indicate a 'lean' condition not rich. That would explain the popping also.
