From '99 to '04 the primary drain plug is an Allen wrench type with tapered threads.
From '05 on up the primary drain plug is a TORQ bit type with a small flange.
The '05 up uses an O-ring to seal the hole, replace the O-ring when you change the fluid. If it continues to leak, then it is most likely the main seal as stated above...

....new bikes have hex bolt. Come out with an Allen key.

Assuming bike has not been dropped on primary or wrecked...either one of each can deform that long casting.....then.... go to HD Dealer....buy o ring for primary plug and gaskets for the chain case and Derby. Be sure and install new gaskets correctly. Drain oil....install new o ring and gaskets. Fill case per manual....do not overfill. I use and recommend Redline Vtwin primary chain case oil over SUNOCO/HD one fits all synthetic.

Clean the engine, tyranny and case area with mineral oil and a few rags...now ride and look for leaks.

Color does not last....we use florecent dye and a blacklight. The dye comes in tiny bottle ....you add according to direction...run the engine and trace the leak in dark garage and blacklight. I clean motor as best I can so I can see new oil trace better.

My idea was to drain and fill the tranny first with Red Line to determine where the leak is coming from (trans or primary).

If I pull the outer primary cover off to replace gaskets, why not go ahead and replace seals as well? I'd hate to put all those new gaskets on there if they are no good when I have to disassemble again.

Any idea where to buy Red Line products online? No one locally carries it.

Regarding the drain plug, it is not a torx or socket hex, it is a cap hex with a flange (search Mcmaster-Carr for "hex head flange cap screw"). Can't remember what size socket it takes.
