I have a 2004 FLSTC. It has andrew gear driven cams plus a bunch of other mods that should not be effecting this problem The cam hae been in the bike a lot longer then this problem has been around. I have had my oil plug blow out of the tank twice now. It happens when I have driven several hundred miles at 70+ mph (freeway driving. Another symptom is it will spit oil out the vent tubes that exit into the air filter, like what happens when you overfill the tank. Some of my riding buds say that ocaisonaly they will see a puff of black smoke. I think this is a venting problem. Unfortunatly the manual is vague on the venting system so any input would sure be welcome......

Sounds like your oil tank is overfilled. When you run at 70+ for a while, your bike heats up a lot and so does the oil. The oil expands and needs somewhere to go so it pops the 710 cap or drains into the breather tube.
Turned out to be that your dipstick needs to take some effort to pull out. If it doesn't, you need to replace it. Mine had the 'new' dangle design and its tolerances weren't up to snuff. Put in an old style dipstick and the problem went away. You can add an o-ring over the dipstick rubber, too, I would think.
I attributed it originally to the fact that Harley had finally stopped all of the oil leaks on their big twins so it needed someplace to go.
