The red die is so you can evenly apply the oil, The red will not last. You are ready for a clean & charge when the steel mesh is difficult to see. If the mesh is clearly visible, you are still good to go.

I do it every 5K, when I change the fluids. Do it first, little oil goes a long way, let it hang somewhere outside while you do everything else and reinstall last.

I have been using K&N filters for years. Clean and recharge on the truck every 50,000 miles. They filter better when they get a little dirty.

Only have 23k on the Camaro and 10k on the bike. No need to clean yet.

I do it once a year, in the spring, before I start riding. Usually works out to 25-30K.

I've probably done mine twice in 11 years/82k miles.

Remove it. Knock it a few times against the floor. Spray it liberally with filter cleaner on the outside. Let it soak for 5 min. Now rinse out all the oil with water...do not use high pressure spray or hot water. Let it air dry for s few hours....sun preferably. Once dry....lightly spray red filter oil until uniformly covered...do not overspread....do not cause oil drip....do not saturated the filter element. Less oil preferable than too much. Put back out in the sun and air for another couple of hours....if its wet with oil or dripping oil reinstall..if you over did the oil spray....reclean, redry, reoil, reair and reinstall.

I clean mine every few months or before I go on a long distance ride out to Vegas or Phoenix. That desert sand will clog up anything. Once the filters looking black on the outer part, it's time to clean it. Why wait so long between cleaning...a can of oil cost $8.
