Ridin home from work today, stopped at shop, no problems yet. After leaving shop, hit 2nd...... 3rd...... went to shift and found the lever stuck up so now Im on Gratiot ave rush hour and not knowin exactly what to do while driving, put hazards on and got to the nearest parkin lot. After lookin at external linkage and not seein a problem, i left. Bike shifted fine through all gears?? Stopped at red light, wouldnt get past 3rd. another 2 miles doin 40ish in a 50, red light, stop, go, shifts all the way through???? WTF!!!!!
I've heard of similar issues elsewhere on these forums. The simplest things are the first things to check. Make sure that your linkage is not binding up on you. When was the last time you lubed the joints and bushings? Sometimes they will bind up and not let the shifter to return to the "home" position in order to select the next gear. If it's something internal, the only thing I am familiar with is the actual clutch adjustment can sometimes interfere with shifting too.
duh, sorry. 2005 FLSTCI 19,000 miles bought used from HD shop "told" it was maintained at shop oils etc... I put about 32-3300 on it last year. I have never lubed links or bushings. changed engine oil 6 weeks ago. checked tranny fluid, showed a little high on dipstick, Ive never messed with it. this problem kinda came up all the sudden??
Clean and lube external shift rod linkage ends..dump tyranny fluid and refil with Amsoil Severe Gear. Get shop manual and make sure your clutch is properly adjusted and cable has full travel.
I pulled of the front end of the shift link at the lever was pretty filthy. cleaned both ends. did notice the shft lever at the gearbox end has some axial play on the shaft. Amsoil Severe gear is a 90w gear oil right? Itll be ok?? or should i go get gouged at HD??
I just went through the same problem with my 05 Night Train. Thought it was going to be an expnsive shifter spring fix. Ended up being as simple as the shifter bushing, where the shifter arm pivots on the frame. Pulled it out and it was rusted over. Cleaned off the rust, greased it up and its as good as new.
cleaned and lubed linkage, changed trans fluid, went with the mobil 1 syn 75-90, rode it and WOW what a difference, shifts are crisper and got neutral on first try no dickin with it. Thanks guys!!!
