Looking at getting a 2007 Heritage Softail Classic. Concerned with corrosion as I live a couple of miles from the beach. What have you chromed on your bike to avoid corrosion and pitting? Also if you could indicate the cost, that would be very helpful.

For instance, the upper forks are already chrome so it would just be the lowers that would need chromed right? Someone posted about $150 - $200 to chrome the sliders in another thread, had a salesmen tell me the chromed forks on the bike in the showroom added $1500.00...maybe the mechanic had them chromed while he waited and charged labor the whole time LOL

Can pitting of the fork sliders be avoided by keeping them waxed? Would it be better to have them done later once they start to pit? have them polished and chromed? Can this be done exchange anywhere?

My limited experience with salt air has been that chrome will not stop the corrosion. (Don't ask how I know that.) The only thing that will is vigilant maintenance..ie. clean and wax. The chrome DOES look good though.

 

I live about 5 miles from the ocean and salt water. I just keep my bike clean and garaged its been through a little over two riding seasons and no pitting at all. I have almost any thing that can be chromed =chromed except the things I decided to leave alone. I think front sliders are about 275 from Harley that's not with labor i think its about 700 to do the job with the sliders and the upper plates some call soup cans also chrome spacer and odds and ends to finish the job

 

Chrome lower forks for your bike are $299.95 in the HD catalog. That's parts only, plus labor.

I have a 2004 FLSTFI (FatBoy) with some extra chrome, including the forks. It will be 3 years in January since I picked up the bike. I live about 5 miles from the beach in NJ and find that I have to be diligent about maintaining the finish of the chrome parts, but it's not too bad. If I get lazy I can see a slight haze begin to form on some of the chrome and then I know it's time to get serious about cleaning. A good chrome polish, good quality wax, some elbow grease and an afternoon a month should be all you need to keep it shiny.

I get It at my local dealer and spray it on durring the winter months, say's it's good, and has been tested at daytona salt spray test, whatever that is.
