Red face Painting Chrome - How Much Scuffing???

I got a mail order deal on a chrome crash bar that was supposed to fit my XBones. It doesn't! But I can make it work. Not worth trying to send back. I've never had good luck painting chrome. Anyone with experience, what grit of sandpaper should I use, and how much sanding do I need to do? Do I just rough it up, or do I need to sand the chrome off?

I would try and take it off. If it gets loose anywhere under the paint, the paint will flake off. I would think once you get it started coming off he rest will follow suit pretty good.
If it is stuck like chuck then I would scuff it really good, prime it and paint.
The worst that could happen is in a few years you will have to re-paint.

I would not think you would need to try and strip the chrome off. I would give it a good sanding with 320 or 400 grit just to give something for the paint to stick to.

Default Painting Chrome - How Much Scuffing???

I just went through this yesterday with a sissy bar I bought off
ebay. The chrome ended up rougher than the pics showed on ebay
so I decided to paint. I used 80 grit emery cloth but didnt bear down
to hard. I primed it with Dupli color primer and painted with Dupli
color gloss black engine enamel.
I chipped it twice mounting it and was being very careful. I think
my problem was using rattle can paint. it just isn't hard enough.
I stripped it back down and going to buy a pint of automotive
grade gloss black and re-spray it.
I was to lazy to drag out the spray gun and go through the process.
Rattle cans are quick but not effective. I'll let you know how it
works out.

Well I guess it depends on each ones experience, but I would NOT use a course sand paper. I would use 1000 up to 1500 and just take all of the shine off of it. This way it still has the chrome shell and is still smooth enough and abrasive enough for your coat of paint.

It has worked for me, but I've never done something as large as a crash guard. That is the route I'd take and it's a hell of alot of less work.

I would just send it to the Powder Pros for a good coat of powder.

+1...Actually that's probably what I'd do also since it is a large bolt on.

True... But I never let logic get in the way!! I've got lots of POR15 and Engine Black left, and you all know how cheap I am!
