2006 Deuce
I am in the market for a Harley. Have not had a bike in several years and finally can afford to buy a real bike, so looking at Deuce. I looked at recent dealer and they are asking 19K for 05, is this normal? 2K over MSRP?
Also, any ideas on where to purchase/order a new 2006? seems like local dealer doesn't want to talk about 2006 models, let alone order one for me.
Lastly, dealer stated he heard that the 06 models will have emissions, like cytlatic converters on it.
Any help would be great.

Have you considererd a good used one? I know of several folks who have started out with NT or Deuces and then get a RK and end up selling their one to three year old bike for a helluva price...
I don't know about converters on bikes yet (I'll bet they will start in Cali soon though), but 2006 will definatly have emissions restrictions as far as what can be done to them. There are plenty of MSRP dealers around (bike availability however may be minimal now) Even if you have to have one shipped to you from another dealer, it will still save you from the 2000 mark-up.
What's up all... long time reader, first time posting here. Great site!
Anyhow, I'm also going to be in the market for a Deuce, but probably not until '06 as well. I'll plan to seriously start shopping this Fall in hopes of taking delivery early next spring (fingers crossed).
Not to hijack this topic, but what is everyone's general feelings on the Deuce? I think it's a fantastic looking bike and I'm pretty sure it's the one for me, however I've yet to actually test ride one yet. The closest I've gotten was the chance to hop on my dad's '96 softail standard... that's what basically sold me on the softails. And I'm sure that they've improved the ride quality even more over the past 8-9 years as well.
Also, would any of you happen to know the standard order time for a brand new Harley? In other words, how early should I look to place an order (if I can find a dealer willing to order one) if I want to ride by say April next year?
Thanks for any input!

You can get the mSRP prices here https://www.hdforums.com/m_68556/tm.htm
The dealer probably doesn't want to talk 2006 because he has the 2005's to sell first. There are going to be cats on the new bikes in either 2006 or 2007 but they are going to happen. You also will have a tougher time doing any upgrades on the 06 and on bikes where as the 2005 are still not covered under the new legislation coming down.

I'm pretty sure the new bikes will have catalytic converters on them. The new "STARS" that came out for 2006 have converters on them. Either way engine/exhaust modifications will be much harder on the 2006 or not allowed at all. You'll want to modify the exhaust. Some of the stock harleys don't even sound like Harleys IMO.
As for cali, don't the bikes going there already have catalytic converters?
Now for MSRP. Easyrider I notice you're from IL as am I. The only problem is you're in southern IL and I'm in northern IL. If you're interested, then I know which dealerships around here will sell for MSRP. I know which will give you free labor on any parts you buy at MSRP after buying the bike for MSRP. I know which dealerships give you 20% off parts that you don't need to install. If you're interested, then PM me. I am from chicago.

1200C...You guys from Chicago call everything except Wisconsin south. Belleville is East-Central...Metropolis (hometown of Superman and next to Paducah, KY) is south. <G> That was a very generous offer you made. My problem (and yours) with Chicago H. D. (the dealer) is that we have to pay sales tax. I don't if I order from M&M in Ohio. We need to get the Mascot flag here. We coould go from EasyRider to Markcuda to TerryT to me to thee. I re-routed to give Mark a little more riding time. If it was just to me, he'd do it on his coffee break.
EasyRider, I think the concern about a waiting period is a thing of the past. This past spring every deler I knew about had several of almost every model on the floor and although the flock is thinning out some, there are still a lot of bikes on the floor. I know that circumstances dictate when we can buy, but if at all possible, I'd be looking now. IMHO and tomy limited knowledge the best dealers around me are Liberty in Effingham, Cozahrs (right around Clinton and Chuck's in Bloomington. Also take 1200C up on his offer of dealer details. I also have heard some pretty amazing things about Benjy's in West Virginia.

It took me three months to get a good deal on my bike and I got it below MSRP and with free storage. Of course, it took me three months to get that deal! I pretty much know who to talk to at every dealership around here up to wisconsin and down to indiana. I know who will budge on the price and when and which salesman to talk to. And I know the perks of each dealership.
As for chicago harley, yes you do have to pay sales tax. However, they're opening up another store in glenview soon, which should have lower taxes. Or if you have a buddy across the border, then you order the parts to their house and avoid the sales tax. Then you have an excuse to take a ride. Many chicagoians own property in wisconsin and such, so you just have it shipped out there.
As for having several of each model, that's true. However, you can still run into problems if you have a very specific color you want. For example, my bike is lava red and vivid black and was the only one in that color that I saw. Actually, it wasn't ever in the showroom but in a crate. And there was one dealership that had it in that time.

I just purchased an 03 Duece with only 2700 miles on it, already had stage one done and I paid $14,400 for it and its flawless. Good deal? I like to think so, but, if your wondering if the Duece is the right bike, I suggest you rent one for a day and try it out. When I got my first Harley it was a Sportster and it was fun as hell to ride, but, when I purchased it, I didn't think my wife would want to ride that often. Well, was I ever wrong, now she is the one saying lets go for a ride. So I sold the Sporty and got the Duece and I couldn't be happier with the bike, especially riding 2 up! I freaking LOVE my Duece! If you look hard enough, you can find a good deal on a used bike, and yes there are plenty of dealers that sell new bikes at MSRP. If I am not mistaken, some dealers will fly you in from out of state if you buy at MSRP and will even offer to ship to to you free if you buy at MSRP. My advice, take your time, do the research and make sure you don't get too caught up in the new bike fever only to kick yourself from suffering buyers remorse because you were too hasty and paid too much. Remember, right now is Bike riding season and dealers are getting away with charging MORE than MSRP, at least I know thats the case at my local dealer in OKC, OK. Thats my two cents worth.
Peace out--

P.S. Did I mention that I love the Duece....lol
