How to shop for exhaust?
Very new to bikes, accessories, and mods. In fact i don't even pick up my bike for another 22hrs, 19min, 32sec ...
I will ride it as it is right now, but i have every intent of converting to dual exhaust. I LOVE the look!
My question is, how do i shop for them? Do i have to wait to find a bike that has it, and see how it sounds to know if i will like it?
Id hate to buy everything, do the work, and find out i am unhappy with the sound.
Thank you, any tips would be appreciated. Again im not rushing into it, but its a change i know i want to make so i am just beginning research.
Good thing to do is go to local bike rallies, swap meets, local biker hangout and look and listen to see which pipes you like best... This is the best way IMO to figure out what fits you best ....
COngratulation on the new bike and get ready to start spending money!!!
Buying the bike was just the down payment for all the parts to come!

That said, it's a combination of the look you're going for, the sound, the performance, and the $.
Another good place to start is this forum. Search some of the dyno threads for performance numbers, and the exhaust threads for some videos of the sound of different pipes. YouTube is another jackpot of info.
Just be ready to leave your wallet open to let the credit cards cool down. This is only the beginning.............
I just know of that one change id be interested in making ... figuring parts ~$700 and a buddy can help with the work. And thats down the road, not immediate
What else should i be expecting to change??
Well, i saw a more comfy passenger seat ...
I also may look into some grips
The windshield seems like it would be better if it were a little lower, might look into that
Oh, and passenger floorboards
A small bag up front across bars would be nice
Ahh hell, you're right! This IS only the beginning!!! ssshhhhh dont tell my wife
If you're going for exhaust, eventually you're going to shop for a new intake, and there are 1000 choices of those.. then you'll need a fuel management system and there's 500 of those.. then you'll look into your grips, and there's 25000 of those.. etc etc.
Truth though, like JPL said, go to rallies and take plenty of pictures. Ask if you can feel people's grips, look at the different work that's out there
First thing you should buy yourself, before exhaust or intake or grips or knickknacks or do-dads, or even before you run yourself through a full tank of gas.. buy the daggum Service Manual. Do it. Once you have that thing in your hands, you'll realize that none of the basic work you'll want to do to your bike is difficult at all, and that with the right set of tools you could do most of it yourself
What else will I want to change?
Thats how I started, lets just throw some apes on it lower it, get some pipes and call it a day.
2 years down the road and I have bought a sh*tload of chrome, a whole new set of bars, might be changing my pipes again soon, then you have rims, shotgun shocks, paint job, wider rear tire, windshield, new covers, maybe a chrome inner primary, maybe your style is black and you decide to PC the whole dam thing, man and when you think you might be done, you see a different part that you just need to have!
I love my exhaust but already getting a little sick of it, and pretty soon might change that up!
It never stops my friend... thats the honest truth

I dont even know where to begin
Most brands will cover a model year period. For instance, V&H considers all softails from '86 - '06 essentially identical and therefore the same pipe will work for all. There may be subtle differences in the mounting bracket, but all that should be accounted for in the one-size-fits-all-these-years- kit. Here's a link to the V&H site to get ya started. Good luck!
