Leather vest at most for me in NC during the summer. It gets too hot here for full leathers in the summer (June too which has been really hot this year).
Can't tell from your profile where you live but check out Fox Creek Leather if you want quality stuff. My vest is from there and they offer very high quality thick leather products.
I got an HD jacket back in '05 when I bought the bike. Got lucky, it was starting to get warm and they were on sale, plus it was a discontinued style. I think I paid $150 for it, which is a great price for any leather jacket, let alone a Harley one. It's served me well the last 6 years, though it only gets worn a few months till the temps warm up. I figure it'll last me a good many more!
Bike weeks and swap meets are also a good place for deals. Picked up some chaps in Carlisle same year I got the bike for $45. Still have em to this day, and aside from all the bug smears, still in great shape.
If you're not in a hurry, wait for sales and discontinued styles. It's well worth it.
Even with it 100 degrees here in Alabama I wear a very loose textile mesh jacket... The one I have happens to be an HD moco Jacket. Its hot but it WILL save the skin should things get bad.
I live in east Texas. Very hot, but Im looking for protection, not too worried about getting too hot.im a novice rider, after a few years ill probably relax and not worry as much, but i'd like to keep my skin on me not on the road.

I went with Leather Up myself. Seeing as how HD leather is made in China or Taiwan....I figured what the heck and bought Water Buffalo out of Pakistan for less then half.
Good heavy leather, excellent quality and you can get everything shipped for $7.50...Order everything at once. You can also get 10% off with a code with online orders.
