Default Checking FXCW Oil

So... Im at about 6900km now, so as a routine I have been checking my oil levels. But I need to clear something in my mind first.

Im torn between the two "Good Books" the owners manual is generic to softails, and says to check the oil on the side stand after its at running temp. Unscrew the dip stick, wipe it off, just hold it against the threads (Dont screw it in again), pull it back out and check the stick.

But the shop manual says to check it when the bike is vertical. And the rest of the procedure is the same, how ever my local dealership, told me to screw it all the way in when its vertical..

Wich is the CORRECT way to check the engine oil in my rocker ?

I wonder which kind of service and owner's manual you got!
In my 2009 Service Manual it clearly states that the bike has to be on Jiffy stand, and that one is generic for all bikes as far as oil checking is concerned.

In my 2009 owner's manual, page 90, it states the following for when checking the oil when hot:

Oil Level Hot Check
Perform engine oil level HOT CHECK as follows:
1 Ride motorcycle until engine is at normal temperature
2 with vehicle upright on level ground, alow engine to idle for 1 - 2 minutes. Turn engine off
3 With vehicle of jiffy stand remove and wipe off the dipstick. Intall the dipstick back into the oil tank.
NOTE:
For FXCW/FXCWC models, thread the filler cap onto the spout until tight. On all other models, push the filler cap until fully seated in the spout.
4 see figure 29 (FXCW/FXCWC) or Figure 31 (all other models). Remove the dipstick and note the level of the oil. Add only enough oil to bring the level to the FULL mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill.

In my 2009 Shop Manual page 1-15:
Checking oil level
Ride motorcycle until engine is warmed up to operating temperature, then do the following.
1 idle motorcycle on jiffy stand for 1-2 minutes
2 shut motorcycle off and leave motorcycle resting on jiffy stand.
3 See figure 1-2. Check oil level on dipstick. If necessary, add oil until oil registers at upper groove on dipstick. Do not overfill tank.

=============

I don't have a rocker, but if I were you I would check it with the dip stick screwed in.

My shop manual is the 2010.

And I dont have it at hand, so I can't say exactly how they wanted the dip stick. Screwed in or rested. I scrwed it in. and on the side stand. It needed almost a liter of oil.. but doesnt leak....

I seem to have to add oil (1/4 litre) every couple hundred miles on my 2009 Rocker. It doesn't leak. Runs great. I drive it hard. Is this oil usage normal?

seems like a lot to me, but I just ride 'em and occasionally service 'em. It has been rare--maybe once or twice, that I have ever added oil to any of the 4 HDs I have owned.

This is how I check mine. I don't see how the '09 and '10 manuals would be different. The tanks are the same, unless the dipsticks are different. Doesn't make sense to change the way the oil is checked though. Funny thing is, when I bought my '09, the salesman told me to check the oil with the bike vertical. I'll stick with what the manual says.
