I just finished putting the engine chrome kit on the bottom end of my bike and am getting ready to put the chrome rocker suport plates and rocker covers. Since I am not taking the engine out for this, the manual specifies using 2 snap-on torque adapters (7/16" and 1/2") on a few of the bolts that a regular torque wrench can't get to because of the frame. They look like the attached pic.
Snap-on wants $26 each or $130 for a set. Anyone know of a cheaper source or a GOOD workaround?
I usually but new tools when I need them, but don't see arecurring need for this one.....
I had my tank off when I addd the chrome engine kit to my 05' Standard (and was doing bars/internal wiring at the same time). I torqued the ones that I could get to w/ a regular torque wrench, then snugged them just a little more w/ a combination wrench or allen (can't remember which). Using these as an example, I "torqued" the odds ones with just the wrench by feel. Just initially torque in the middle of the range, and a little more with the wrench won't snap them. Worked for me - no leaks or problems...........
No, if I remember correctly, not enough room to get a wrench on them - had to come from above with a short allen, or socket. I have combination wrenches that are open end and socket end - might have used one of those. I just remember it was only impossible to get to 1, maybe 2 bolts with the tank off, and I wasn't paying $37 for the adapter off of our Snap-On truck at work (to probably only use 1 time in my life). As a matter of fact, I think I even asked one of the tech's at the local dealer about this, and this was his recommendation to me That's what they do apparently (too cheap to use the correct tool also).
I got mine from http://www.mcmaster.com/
Type in Torque adapters
Where it says "Chose from 3 pages" pick "Locking Pliers, Sockets & Crowfoot Wrenches "
They are about half way down the page. About 12.00 for the sizes you will need.
