I ride a 08 Night Train and went to wash it today and found oil all over the clutch cable starting about half way up the down tubes and all the way down under the motor and it was also all over the right frame rail but didn't see any on the block or tranny. Do any of you have any suggestions on where to start looking for the most common leak on this bike. I plan on cleaning it with a degreaser and looking for it but just thought it might be a common problem..
Could also be the transmission was overfilled last time?
Might not be common, but if you do a google on "site:hdforums.com oil leaking clutch cable" you got hits from the sportster, dyna, softail and touring section on this.
I did the 5000 mile service myself using SNY 3 in all locations. I did the service 4500 miles ago and it just started leaking very recently (riding in 100 degree weather but mosty on highway). I used a degreaser on it tonight to clean all surfaces and will see if i can trace it from there. Thanks for the tranny vent link will check it out. Thanks for any help..
I should have done this to my gf's Sportster a couple years ago. We got caught in some massive rain on three different days during a two week ride. When we got the bike back home and I went to service it, there was a lot of water in the primary/trans. Took me about 5 cans of brake cleaner and carb cleaner and 6 oil changes with gear lube, diesel oil and the like to get all the water out so things weren't white anymore. Next time I'll just pinch the tranny breather hose off when we get caught in the rain. Hehehe.
