Default PC III USB Tunes???

Hey Guys - Just got my "new" 2006 Deluxe last week. It had 1090 mi on it when I picked it up and I just turned 1500 so it looks like I'm back into riding after a long (over 28 year) departure from Biking.

This one is pretty tricked out with V&H, chrome, and PC III USB. I do have questions about the "tune" that was on it. I'll do a quick search but JIC one of you has some suggestions, here's the potential issue:

I have a stock ECM, V&H Staggered Big Shots (w/o baffles I think but how can i tell?), and Screamin Eagle AC. There is a 2001/2002 Softail tune for that and it is what was on the bike when I picked it up.

There is also a tune for the 2006 Softail with the same "accessories" (although the notes in the tune file do not indicate "without baffles".

When I compare the two, the 2006 tune is much richer than the 2001/02 everywhere except at 1750 rpm.

I certainly don't want to burn the valves so I've been using the '06 tune.

Anybody have some experience or suggestions as to what to do about this (if anything). I'm considering getting the local shop to do a Dyno Tune for me and forget the existing maps.

Thanks, D

Your best bet is to have it custom dynoed instad of using a canned MAP.

Most of us on this forum seem buy from Jamie at FuelMoto and they do a great job of creating a large data base of MAPs for the PC, many more than Power Commander has and they will work with you to dial in your bike if the canned MAP is not quite right.

I would stay with the MAP for the 06 since that is what your bike is, probably the 01-02 ECM started with considerably different settings than your 06 has.

As XARAN said, your best bet is to have it custom tuned. I've said this before, and I'll say it again- a "canned map" will get you in the ballpark, but a custom tune will put you in the batter's box. With that being said, just because a guy has a dyno doesn't make him a tuner. Where are you located? Maybe we can give you a recommendation of where to go.

Thanks for the feedback. I'd sort of come to the same conclusion already. I'm in Houston. I stopped by Republic HD earlier today and talked with Rob (their Dyno Tech). We looked at both maps and the '06 is likely closer to the "ballpark".

They get $285 for a custom tune (about 3 hours of labor time) and do a "base run" and then a final run after all the tuning. Since I've no idea what DynoJet used as a baseline, I have no idea how close they are with their map.
