Default 2007 deluxe stator replacement???

finally found out my stator is bad on my deluxe,my local harley guy told me i have to pull the inner and outer primary chain, starter etc. to change it,5 hour job,,350-400.00 labor!,plus the stator,150.00 and i need to replace the regulator,145.00,,if it only takes that long, might be more,,,bike only has 12k on it, and i guess 2007 is all by its self,,,anyone else have to do this?,,is it something i can do without special tools?,i build hot rods for a living, cant be that hard????,,,,

The only special tools you need for this are some BIG sockets. On the Evo's, you need an 1 1/2" and 1 3/16 socket for the compensator and clutch nuts. I think the Twinkies are the same. Sears has a large 5 piece socket set for under $20. You also need something to wedge between the two sprockets or between the chain and a sprocket. Do a search for primary chain locking tool and you'll see a bunch of different ideas. Some will say you need an impact gun for the compensator nut but that's not really true. You will probably need a breaker bar and possibly a pipe to get the needed leverage. That nut is spec'd at 150 foot pounds and most dealers just impact the living chit out of them instead of using a big torque wrench. Not sure if you have to pull the inner primary on your bike or not. Some you do; some you don't. Some people with the former machine out a little off the inner primary so the stator will come off with the inner primary still on. Also remember that the clutch nut has a left handed thread. This is easier to remove than the compensator because it is only spec'd at 80 foot pounds.

Do not use an impact to put the compensator nut back on. Easy way to screw up the flywheel alignment. Also, it can be difficult to remove the clutch hub without a puller. And get the correct puller; don't use the typical gear puller.

I was having charging issues. I brought my bike to my local Indy and was quoted $300-325 for the complete system installed and after actually checking he was going to do the job for $275. If you decide not to do it yourself, shop around man.

...so, any particular problems you encountered? Did you need to pull the inner primary?
