wondering if I should pay the local stealer to do a 1000 mile service on my 05 standard. I bought the bike 2 months ago with 340 miles on the clock. (some dude traded it for an 06 deluxe, it was spotless, guy kept it almost 2 full years and didnt ride it[sm=confused06.gif] anyway, the 2 year warranty expired a couple weeks ago so its not a warrany requirement now. was reading the thread about the dealer service myth. I am going to change oil myself of course but was wondering about this first interval. things like spoke tightness and such.
No reason why you can't do it yourself and save lots of $$, buy the service manual and you can always ask lots of questions here. If the bike has been pretty stationary for 2 years I would change the fluids right away. depending on your climate sitting idle can lots of problems....dry seals, bushings....
make sure you check the tires good too...last thing you need is a dry rotted tire coming apart at highway speed...
I hear ya(machines need to be run) but the dealer said the bike was "thoroughly checked and serviced" when I bought it. fluids all looked clean. bike looks and runs like brand new. My salesman said the 1000 mi. service wasnt done cause it was too early with only 340 miles but with every trade in fluids are always changed and bike is inspected (whatever that means)Guess I better get a manual and think on it[sm=alcoholic.gif]

That is kind of wierd, why would someone pay all that money for a bike and then not ride it.
Rick
There is a 1930's or so Knuckle head bike in the dealers museum over in Buffalo NY that only has less than 50 miles on it.
Seems the guy bought it, rode it home, then parked it in the barn, and just forgot it. Seems kinda weird to me but it takes all kinds.
if it has been sitting I would change the oil. it wont cost that much. I would have the 1000 mile service done on the bike . when these bikes are delivered the primary chain and some other stuff is loose they want it trhat way for the break in. This stuff should be adjusted at that service . the 1000 mile is not suposed to cost that much check it out
you got that right 06FXST. from what the finance chick told me, the guy traded the 05 fxsti and an 06 harley ( didnt say which type) with only 800 some odd miles on it for an 06 deluxe. she said he really took a bath on the trade. its probably sitting too[&o]. maybe he keeps it in the living room as a conversation piece[sm=headbang.gif]
I had the dealer do my 1000 mile service, but after finally picking up the service manual and looking through it I could have done it myself. The service manual is real easy to follow, and I'm planning on doing the service on my bike from now on. Enjoy the new ride!
