Default 2011 Heritage - LEDs and Bent Crank

Copied/pasted from the "Chat" forum, didn't want to hijack the LED thread)

I agree that the HD LED headlamp is very, very bright - pretty important in this country where you share the road with all manner of livestock, deer and elk.

Not that it would stop me from buying it again - which I guess I sorta did - but mine developed a condensation problem immediately after installation. So did the HD LED passing lamps, and my left LED front turn signal smoked itself after about 100 miles. Not an installation problem, they were installed by a highly competent, experienced mechanic - my son. There apparently is a new part # for the headlamp - not a "recall", just a new number when they give you a new light.

My dealer (Salem Harley Davidson in Salem, Oregon) is taking great care of me, so that's not a problem - but it's still a giant PITA. Of course they have their hands full taking care of me, since my 2011 Heritage has been in the shop for the last 2+ weeks waiting for parts - it was making a hell of a noise - at about 800 miles, was at the Hells Canyon rally in Baker, so there were about 1150 miles on it when I finally got it to the shop - it had a bent crankshaft, which took out a front piston plus a few other things. The only good thing is it didn't come apart while I was on it. I don't want to ride anything but a Harley (had a 2009 FLHTC before the Heritage and a 2007 Deluxe before that) - but this has been a real disappointing deal so far.

Nope - they're rebuilding the original. HD says it was "just" a bent crank and the front piston, etc. so doesn't warrant (so to speak) a new engine. Might be true, but waiting for the parts is starting to get stupid.

The dealership said they'd give me something to ride, declined at first but I think I'll do that if it's going to take another couple of weeks to get my scoot. It's just a hassle when they're 225 miles away.

Interesting... my Lo got a small oil leak at about 1100 miles and my dealer offered to fix it or put in a new motor. I'm guessing if you pushed the issue you could get a new motor if you wanted.

I went a different route. Had them fix it and bought the 103 stage 2 kit. No labor charges since they had to tear it down anyway.

Was thinking about going with a kit myself while it was torn down, might still do it. Thanks for the replies and information.

Again thanks for the replies, I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow and see what's up - depending on the answer will decide whether or not to call HD customer service and start down that path.

call and push for a motor, I tore up a tranny in 5k ( being stupid of course) and they said they would re-build, I said no, you'll put in a new tranny, case close.
