does anyone know if an 2006 night train has safe mode when motor gets hot. This is what happened doing a tots for tots ride moving very slow the bike had a very rough idle.As soon as the motor cooled off idle is normal.thanks for help
I have an 06 Springer Softail and I was in Yakima, WA in July when it was over 110 degrees, my bike was very hot.... However, no rough Idle. Having said that I would take it to the dealer? Good luck!
Yes, your bike has a provision that will slow the idle and shut the bike down if it overheats. Its designed to protect the bike and very normal during parades where temps are over 90 degrees. If you are moving you are ok but crawling along at parade speed is very hard on the engine, clutch, and your hand. Oil breaks down at high temps and when you get that probem you should pull over and allow the bike to cool down.
I will not ride my bike in parades for that reason when the temps are up there. Our HOG club had a warning about this recently and several folks had burned up clutches on older bikes. The club had concerns that they did not want members to lose an engine, although that has not happened as yet.
So don't worry, its a normal condition, just pull off and shut down and avoid those situations in the future if you can.
I understand you can install an electric fan on the bike to help with this issue plus the oil cooler that will help some also.
I had to learn from the HOG club members and have elected to stay out of the parades. Our HOG chapter is involved in many of the high school, city and charity parades around Portland, OR. They are all worthwhile causes, but I got to tell you that a massive traffic jam where you sit and crawl a few feet at a time and the bike heat comes up in my face and my hand gets tired, its not fun to me.
Most of the other club events we are moving and I enjoy the group riding and fun times.
Not a mechanic, but I think I read this somwhere. It's a "heat management system". At some point, it stops firing one of the cylinders, alternating back and forth, and I assume stops injecting fuel. This accounts for the rough idle. The theory is that the engine draws in "cool" air on the intake stroke, compresses it without adding fuel or firing, and expels it on the exhaust stroke, thus cooling the engine. Sounds good, but I'm not sure it's correct.
