...when the bike is cold, the first time or two going up into second gear, it's very stiff, after that it's fine. Also, it took more oil than the manual says to fill it. Does all of this sound normal?? Thanks!
How much and what kind of oil did you use? I generally just dump in a quart with no problems. I have been using Drag Specialties primary fluid and have been happy with it.

I used HD fluid, almost two quarts. I put the bike on the jack and filled to the bottom of the primary cover opening; like the manual says. There's no slipping or any other ill effects, and once the gears have been runs through and everything heats up, everything is fine.
I agree that two quarts sounds like a lot, but I thought the manual said fill to the bottom of the primary opening...I'm going to go out and re-read the manual and make sure.
I realize this isn't rocket science, but the book seems to contradict itself. The Clymer's manual says to put the bike in an upright position (not on the jiffy stand) and fill with the recommended quantity (26 oz.). It also says "The oil level must be even with the bottom of the clutch opening or at the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring." So, is it 26 oz. or the afore mentioned statement, because 26 oz. doesn't get it to that mark. thanks for everyone's help on this simple but mind-boggling issue...
