My 07 Deuce really rides rough. I cringe when I see a bump in the road because I know its gonna be a huge jolt. I am 250lbs and ride solo. I never realized how bad it was till I took a long ride on the StreetGlide the other day. I do not remeber my 07 Nightrain being like this. It rode pretty good. The Deuce only has 2,500 miles on it. Some ideas I had were to adjust the preload on the rear shocks and change the oil in the front springs. Was also thinking of putting in Progressive front springs but I do not want to lower anything. I like the way the bike sits now. Any ideas on what I can do?
Preload adjustment is free so second that as your first option. If it's still not what you want, consider Progressive shocks, fork springs, and heavy duty fork oil.
I agree that you should firm up your shocks before you decide to replace them. This will keep the bike from bottoming out.
Softail models come from the factory at the softest setting. This is for a 180lb rider.
For reasons that don't make sense to me the factory loctites the shock retention nuts, so you may have to use heat on them the first time they are broke loose. Do not use loctite on them when you are done.
Most Softail owner's never adjust their shocks, regardless of how much weight the bike is carrying. This is mostly because either they don't know how to do it or don't realize that they are adjustable.
I don't know why the dealerships don't spend a few minutes and show new owner's how to adjust the shocks when they are selling the bike.
