Default Big Problem

This morning, I met up with a couple of guys I met on here and we went on the bike blessing run. Cruised around the island for a while, having a good time setting off the car alarms in Waikiki. here is the problem.

I posted this question before but now I have a little more to add.

Cruising on my 2001 Fatboy is fine as long as I am wide open on the throttle, or as long as my RPMs are climbing. If I try to cruise at low RPM it sucks real hard through the intake for a split second, the bike cuts out and then lurches forward and keeps rolling. It did it every once in a while so I called the shop. The shop told me I might have water in my gas tank, so I drained it and refilled it. Then they told me to try octain booster, so I tried that and it is still doing it every once in a while.

Today on our ride, I stopped and filled up with premium and rolled out. Now it is doing that suck and sputter every couple miles. We were coming down a hill in 3rd gear and we had some on and off traffic spots so I clutched it up and rolled. Got to the bottom of the hill and hit the gas but nothing happened, MY BIKE DIED!! Wouldnt engage well enough to start until i stopped and it fired right back up.

On the way home, I was stuck in traffic. I clutched it to stop and it died. Its not like it sputtered out and died, it just cut off....

Went to the Harley shop on my way home and asked the guys in the service department what it might be. He told me that I needed to get a screaming eagle super tuner (he said fuelpaks dont work) and that my hoses probably were deteriorating from the inside?!?! I asked him if he would look at it for me and he said "dude, I get off in 20 minutes, but you can bring it back Tuesday"
"WHAT? I dont even know if it will get me home. How much is it going to cost?"
"400 dollars. and then if we find something wrong with it we will call you before we put parts on it."

What do you guys think it could be? I hate Harley shops, and would like to fix it myself, But I cannot work on fuel injectors.....

The first thing I would do is take the FuelPak out and see if it still cuts out on you. That way you can rule it out as the problem. And I would look for an Indy to talk to...Harley mechs are going to want you to pay through the nose for labor just to look at t.

Have you ever changed the fuel filter? It could also be a leak in the intake gaskets. I wouldn't have them add anything until you figure out what the problem is...throwing good money after bad. Start with the small things (filter) and try one at a time, or take it to a good indy. It's not cutting out because you don't have a super tuner...erghhhh!

+1 on DeluxeLady,
You need to get the problem diagnosed first before you try to fix thing$.

Eliminate the obvious like a clogged air filter.

If you think it's fuel related have the system pressure tested.

It may be as simple as a fuel filter. On my 03 the fuel filter is inside the tank, and if your going in there you should check for pin hole leaks in the fuel lines, but the pressure test should reveal this

I think it might be a pinhole in your fuel pickup line inside the tank if the bike is fuel injected.

You could possibly just have gotten some really dirty gas and whatever is in there is clogging things up? You can try adding in some Sea Foam and maybe even some octane booster to clean it out and see if that helps. Just a suggestion.

Alright, I filled it up with octaine booster before I had the problems, I pulled the tank off and flushed it, checked all the lines, pulled off the air filter, it was gross but no clogs. I am going to order the fuelpak and see if that fixes it. I have an after market intake and pipes, and it has never been tuned so i think i should get one anyway.

BigJ, Has it given you problems since sunday? Having aftermarket pipe and A/C without a tuner, although not good, it shouldn't cut the motor off.

Sounds like it could be a air intake leak, check bolts and tighten if necessary. Could also be cracks in the fuel line, as I'm sure even Hawaii has ethanol gas which is hard on fuel lines.
