Standard ft end question

Standard ft end question
How's it going I have a 03 fxst
I'm planning on changing the ft end to the fatboy style , I just like the look better
I was planning on just buying a used ft end and chromming it out but a freind of mine says I could just buy the fatboy upper and lowers and mount them on the standard ft end which would save the expense of buying a used ft end and chroming it out, I've been checking catalogs and the fl's and fx's have diffrent parts is that because they are just bigger on the out side ?there both 41mm right?
I've tried my dealer but they wernt much help my freind insists they are the same ,anybody ever do this or have a opinion? Thanks in advance for any help
