This happened to me when I pulled right side pipe to add my cam cover. I think i tightened the flange nuts too much and that is why the studs broke loose as I have had numerous exhausts on my bike and this is the first time I have had an issue.
I checked the studs thread and it was fine. Red loctite and put it back in. Checked the next day and the nuts move freely. On a side note it seems much easier to get the exhaust on this way than getting the flange over the studs and then putting the nuts on. It kind of made me laugh. I will be adding new heads in about a month so i am not concerned about new studs or anything. The studs on my new heads which are sitting right here are practically brand new as are my heads.
If you are worried about nuts seizing on the studs use some anti seize. I lvie a few miels from teh ocean and still have never experienced seized nuts (pardon the pun) so I really don't think it is an issue, but just a thought.
You ever do much wrenching? Over time from getting hot then cooling off the nuts can seize to the studs. So, when you try to take the nut off it can unscrew the stud from the head or snap the stud.
Won't happen with G8 or SS studs if anti-sieze is used on the exhaust flange nuts. There is a torque spec for the exhaust flange nuts and I would be a six pack that those that have problems with studs over tightened the exhaust flange nuts. Additionally, they should be checked from time to time, just like tire pressure and oil level; they will come loose. First indicator is decel popping.
