Default Question: HD Windshield fitment on Fat Boy Lo

My wife bought me HD part number 58278-95 (Detachable King-Size Windshield for FL models... 18" Lightly Smoked). The description lists the FLSTFB as one of the models it will fit. Well, it fits, but the bottoms of the brackets are kind of flared out a little and they really don't seem to engage the bottom bushings very well. The windshield is secure once installed, but it's kind of a pain to do. Does anybody else have this shield and run into this??

I had to bend and tweek the brackets a little bit on mine. Now it goes on and off with ease.

That's what I was thinking I will have to do also, but wasn't sure I wanted to risk it. I'm fairly handy with tools, but not sure I have the proper ones to do it well. How did you do it without scratching the stainless?

I used a big pair of channel locks for bending the brackets and a piece of leather to keep from scratching them.

I've just bent them out by hand. A little 3n1 oil on the bushings also makes the shield slide on and off easy.

Mine was abad fit since new on my 2011 Fatboy. It started tearing up the rubber bushings pretty much right away. The dealer tried to say all was OK and lubed the bushings but nothing else was done. Last time I went there for a leaking master cylinder I told them I wanted new bushings put on and the winshield made to fit better, it was getting ridiculous. They finally fixed it. A warning on lubing the bushings, after the dealer did this to "fix" the problem, I accidentally bumped the windshield with my head while pushing the bike into the garage and it was enough force to unlatch it.

Wow, and I was considering a windshield for long trips until I read this.

I would not give up on the idea of a windshield because of a couple of post on here. Many have them and have no problems with them at all. I have none with mine. It was just a little more snug getting on and off then I liked. I just bent the tabs a little to it fit just a bit better. 1-2 min of my time and it was perfect.

Uh, don't let a couple posts dissuade you. Like anything on these bikes, there is a little tweaking involved. Mines goes on and off in 20 seconds and fits perfect.

I have come accustomed to riding without a windshield....don't know if I'll ever buy one.

I have a buddy that had a softail standard for 5 years. Paid big money for a detachable shield....and used it twice!
