Default Exhaust questions on a 06 Deuce.

Hello all, new guy here trying to learn a thing or two. I'm use to modifying stuff and working on it. But I am not real familiar with the way things have an affect on a bike. So I'd rather run some thing by you all and see if I am on track.

The bike is a 06 FXSTD/I, it is actually my fathers. But any upgrades etc he wants will be done because of me. He really doesn't have the time or enjoys it like I do. He is wanting to run some aftermarket pipes, complete exhaust system. There are several designs he likes in the Vance & Hines lineup such as the Big Radius 2 into 2, and the ShortShots Staggered

What I question though is the other changes that go along with the exhaust mod. As I understand it currently... you need to upgrade to a stage 1 intake and have the computer programed either by 1. the dealer or 2. a module you can buy which there are several on the market it looks like including V&H's FuelPak. IS THIS correct or do I have it all wrong?

If this is right, this will prevent the suborn azz from making the mods he wants cause he sees it as "too much trouble" and certainly money. I don't see what the big deal is. So this leads me to the next question... is it possible to upgrade exhaust and then in time the filter (6 months or so later) and then have things reprogrammed? OR is this going to be harmful to the engine?

Thanks in advance for your help. I tried searching, and I think I have the right answers. But I don't know if you can do this stuff incremental or not.

IMO, I would suggest doing it all at the same time. I think if you waited and only changed the pipes it would affect how it runs. I believe it would still run but not efficiently. I did my V&H, A/C and PCIII with tune all at the same time.

You can just put pipes on without a stage 1 or air filter. If you get the V&H fuelpak you can set it yourself, they have settings on their site

The short shots looked great on my deuce

Thanks for the replies! The modules like the one V&H has (fuelpak)... it would not worry me setting it up myself. More of my concern is the cost, just one more darn thing to the list. But I have no clue how much it would cost to have this done at the dealer either, so this could be the cheaper route and I just don't know it. Also I am not sure how easy it would be to hide. Looking at their site, it looks small. But it also looks like they mounted it on the side in plain view. He nor I would be real thrilled about that, we would have to hide it if possible. One thing I think I am gathering from what has been said though is that if we did it all at once, and opted for the dealer to correct the fuel/spark curves, then the bike could be ridden 30 miles away to where the dealer is located for service without any harm. Just maybe some less than par performance.

BTW... Those are some NICE rides you both have! I like the pipes on both!

I ran my big radius with nothing else for a yr with no problems.. Then I got my stage 1 air cleaner and power commander from fuel moto for in the 300 range if I remember right. Theyhad/have a deal goin on.. The power commander came setup for my bike. You just have to tell them what your bikes setup is... Then it's just plug n play under the seat... I think I have 550 in the pipes(eBay) and 300ish on the tuner and air cleaner..installed all myself so no labor

Ah see that is more my speed on doing things! Funny how every hobby I touch gets $$$ quick LOL! That is good to know you didn't see any adverse affects waiting a year on the other mods. Now if he can narrow down his choices in pipes maybe I can get to do some wrenching
