what he^ said. i used this today on my new pipes to get some of my boot rubber off. no scratches, but i didn't grind away with it either. just apply with light pressure.
Thanks, any idea where they sell that Never Dull polish? I suspect it's a lot cheaper than anything the dealer sells. Now all I need to do is replace my wife's new $120 boots she ruined yesterday. I guess the ultimate fix to keep it from happening again is 2 into 1 pipes. Anyone know who makes a good set that works with the 2007 Deluxe. I know there's been a problem getting after market pipes for the 2007s. I've also seen some bad comments re Vance & Hines pipes recently so I'm a little leary of them. Was looking thru the catalog and noticed a lot of Softail models have that one above and one below the rear peg design. What was HD thinking?
I would check the aftermarket catalogs (Kuryakyn, for example) for a set of offset peg supports. I think I saw some when I was looking for what I wanted for my Nightrain (the pipes there are right under the pegs so that the bottom of the boot heel melts on to the pipes). I ended up making some offsets to solve the problem on mine. You could also design a slick little guard and have it chromed, then put it on the foot peg so that your wife couldn't turn her boot far enough to get the heel or the toe on to the pipe... make it a personalization project. Heck, you might even have people want to buy them from you.
I use Autodesk CAD products in my business. Autodesk does all kinds of brain dead things that you have to find a work around for. Now, their products don't cost as much as a Harley, but their design flaws are in your face every day at work. They have left these kinds of issues up to third party vendors or new features. Often, they watch what the third party vendors do and then they reproduce it in their next release since they can't come up with enough good ideas on their own to keep moving product. Sometimes I think that HD has learned from the software industry... there was nothing about the improvements in the '07 Nightrain that should have kept them out of the '06 and it sure pisses me off when I could have waited six months and bought what I really wanted... sigh. There is no way that they don't know that everyone gets pissed off about boot marks on their pipes, and passengers, of all riders, would be those who don't think about the possibility of their boot getting on a hot pipe.
Unfortunately, the third party vendors have learned that if they come up with something that is a basic improvement rather than an appearance enhancement or speciality item, then the mother ship makes the improvement themselves... so, there's no reason for them to be truly innovative because they will lose their *** in setup costs and don't have the money to fight the big guys.
Easy-Off oven cleaner works wonders on melted rubber on pipes. It does work better when the pipes are warm though (warm, not hot. As in an hour or so after you have ridden, or just warm the bike up). Just be careful not to get it on the paint.
For you guys with pegs vs floorboards, I'd definitely consider extended mounts.. Those stock mounts are just too short... I added the chrome toolbox so it was very required, to get the peg out from under the toolbox.. Thinking of going even longer so the peg hinge is at the outter edge of the toolbox and pipes. Good way to add some inexpensive chrome as well to replace the zinc plated stuff.. I'll probably do it when I get around to some cool pegs.. a million years from now.. I'm a one-up guy so I doubt it'll be a priority any time soon for sure.
Every time I see these kind of posts, I think about a buddy who has a big block '68 Corvette with those big tube Hooker sidepipes on it. We went to a car show one day, got out of the cars and went to register, and when we came back there was a pair of kid's flip flops melted to his sidepipes! Apparently the kid had tried to climb up on the sidepipes to look inside his car and the flip flops just stuck to the pipes, so the kid left them and ran off. Talk about a mess!!!!
use a little carb. cleaner on the pipe, let it set about 10 min, then use some blu-job.
works really well.
anything hard will will leave scatches, even plastic.
I have the SE double barrel on mine, and it had marks on the pipes under the foot peg when I got it.
So, even with the pipes under the foot, there isn't that much clearance to the foot peg, especially if the passenger wears boots with heels.
But I have not had any problem myself, my wife wears the Harley Badlander boots and she hasn't touched it yet.
But I guess if you want to be on the safe side, pipes below the foot pegs and the floor boards(part #50396-05) would be the way to go?
