Is it ok to use either Mobil1 20W50 Vtwin Synthetic or Amsoil in the Transmission and Primary hole or do I need to use specific tranny oil for that?
I've been running the HD Syn3 stuff in all holes and like it but wanting to switch to something else because I'm tired of getting ripped off by the MoCo with their ridiculous prices.
Mobil says you can use the same their 20W50 VTwin in all three. I don't.
I use the 20w50 VTwin in the engine, their 10/40 racing oil in the primary and their 75/90 LS Gear lube in the transmission. All on the shelf at Advanced Auto Parts.
I think 20W50 is entirely too light for a tranny. I use BelRay85W140 in mine and it's doing fine. Of course, everyone's bikes are probably 'doing fine' so who knows?
As others have said; you can use it in all three holes. Ive done some searching myself to see what others are using and of course there are a lot of different opinions. Based on the research I think on my next change I will simply use Amsoil 20W50 in all three holes or at least in the engine/primary and maybe go with Amsoil 75W90 in the trans. Time will tell
The viscosity of 20w50 MOTOR OIL is very similar to 80W90 GEARLUBE. Note we are comparing apples to oranges. The two are measured differently. Many people claim there is less tranny "clunk" which I can understand. Coming from metric all my life, with the transmission integrated with the engine, I have no problem running 20w50 in the transmission.
