Default Apes, and risers..

I just got a new to me bike...
It has.... I haven't measured 12" apes on it... Look 14"-16" to me with my eyeball tape measure..
The bars are knurled...
But the move easily...
Not the riser...
I can push and pull the bars forward and back....
The risers are ok... This is on a springer front end... My bushings are new...
Just the bars move easily...
If that's normal... Can I put a shim or anything to help tighten them up....

Oh... Yes... The spring is in the left riser also, just in case it comes up..

Nice bike. the bars should not move back and forth that easily. there are several option of how to tighten them up. First make sure the riser clamp bolts are tight, but don't strip them. I can't remember the torque value. If that does not do it (the knurling has probably been worn close to smooth under the risers) you can use some emory clotch, skateboard griptape or strips of aluminum cans and wrap the around the bars. Put them back on. This should help. Another option is to helicoil the bolt holes (it is stronger than the aluminum of the risers) and see if that helps. I used a chisel to put some notches in my wild 1's that were having knurling issues after about 4 years and put it all back together with the helicoils and it was much much better.

last but not least you could drill and tap the risers and put some set screws in to hold the bars in place. My Carlini bars are smooth and teh risers came with set screws in them and this holds the bars perfect. I can stand on my boards and put all my weight on the bars and they will not move.

Thanks drew!!!
I have drilled and tapped the holes... There was one stripped...
But I just went to
3/8 x16...
I will try the grip tape... I wasn't sure if that was an option, right now, don't think it will hurt...
I'd rather have shorter bars... But will deal with these for now..

Thanks for the help and compliments...
Now to get cholos....
But that will take time..

Those don't look like 12" apes to me either. Look more like 14" at least.

Shorter? NEVER!! Always taller apes. And taller risers too!

Take a look at the risers. Is there a visible gap between the cap and the riser itself? Quite often the riser caps are making contact with the riser. ie, the is no gap. If that is the case, no matter how tight you crank on them they will never fully clamp down on the bars. You can fix the problem by simply grinding down the cap ends just a tad till a visible gap appears. That way you KNOW that you are tightening down on the bars, not the risers.
