So my bike would suck through the intake and cut out for a second. I replaced the fuel pump, lines and filter. Everything was good for about a week. THEN, I was going down the highway and it sputtered out like it was out of gas. It started up and I rode about 2 miles and it died again. This happened about 5 times before it wouldnt start anymore.
Took it to the dealership, and I just got the call. The Crank Sensor is bad? The bike wouldnt run at all if the crank sensor was bad would it? He did a diag on it and that is what came up. He then told me that if they replace that and it doesnt work, they have to replace the ECM. Someone PLEASE tell me they arent blowing smoke up my ***. The fact that it started and ran 5 times before it was finally dead makes me think that they are full of it. Let me know....PLEASE!!!!!!!!
from what i've read around here, the crank sensor is a common problem on these motors. do you have a tuner plugged into the factory system ? its possible thats bad..
crank sensors can go bad like you experienced. electronics subjected to severe heat and vibration will go bad..
well it was doing it before. Thats when I replaced everything in the tank and then I added a PCIII. Now it is doing it again. So it has been doing it before and since I put on the tuner
If you don't trust them bring it home and test it yourself. Seriously! open up the cover and apply heat from a heat gun, or even a blow dryer and see if while setting and idling if it causes the motor to stumble or die. Simple.
The ECM is the next item in the ignition chain and they should be able to test this in their shop. This can also suffer from heat. Depending on where it's located on your bike you could test it with the heat gun too.
I tested and found out that at the moment the motor died I had no spark. Turn off the ignition and back on and sometimes it fired, and sometimes it took a minute or so to re-fire, and off I'd go. I started with a breaker, a coil, then a cam sensor and finally it was the ignition module.
This start and stop thing happened at odd times. Sometime I could go for an hour. And sometimes it only took 10 minutes or so. It'd fire back up and the same thing over and over all last summer while trying to chase it down.
At least now I know I have a rebuilt new ignition system, and hopefully reliable for another 40,000 miles.

BigJLocke, I know this is an old post; what was the outcome? I also have a 2001 carb Fatboy and had a hard time starting it yesterday. When it did start it dies after 2secs; even with choke out and/or throttle turned a bit. I always top of tank before parking bike in garage to minimize moisture buildup since I don't ride often. Bike only has 18k miles; plugs look which I replaced at about 11k miles. Last time I rode it was 3mos ago and it started up fine.
Stalled bike and once cooled down she starts again for FEW MILES
I HEAR TALK ABOUT THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR. HOW CAN A PERSON TEST THIS PIECE WHEN THE ENGINE DOES NOT RUN! My 2002 Heritage did the old run quit run maybe twice and that was it! I am curious how this thread turned out for folks. If it is possible to test the sensor! Resistance value or something!
