Default Seats for different model years

I'm looking for a bargain on a new seat, probably a solo, and it would be a whole lot easier if I knew how much modification it would take to use a seat from one model year/group on another. For example, there are lots of 1985-1999 softail seats at good prices, but I have a 2004 FXST and those are usually grouped as 2000-2005, or 2000-up and different makes differ on which groups they put together. Some say "fits 2000-2011" and others separate "2006-2008" or whatever.

Has anybody modified or adapted a softail seat to models and years it's not supposed to fit? Anybody know the differences?

Anybody?

To simplify the question - does anybody know what mods you'd need to a 85-99 softail seat to put it on a 2004?

Why not just go ahead and buy one, then after U get it to work U can be the first to start a thread on how to do it.

start hanging out at your local dealer, HOG chapter meetings, bike nights, etc... until you see a seat you like - buy the owner a long neck and I'll bet he'll let you see if it fits your bike.

I know you are looking for new, but I just sold my 02 FXST and still have the Saddleman Gel two up with backrest for sale for 225 + shipping, 500 new and has about 7k on it ((it fits 00 to 05 (and maybe 06) Standards, Fatboys and Heritages, yes it has the connectors for the fl frame)). I now have an 08 Heritage and just put a new Saddleman Gel on it, the same seat, just made to fit the 08 FLSTC.
