I read a post in which someone asked if anyone had ever started their bike with the ignition switch turned to the left. Many commented that they tried to start their bikes with the ignition to the left but no one was successful. I turned the switch to the left on my 06 softail deluxe and it turned on, however, the security light (red key symbol) remained on and when I put my bike in first gear and gave it some gas, it did not respond. But it also did not shut off. Can anyone tell me if this means it's time for a new ignition. Also, I recently purchased this bike and though it has a 5-gallon tank, after 2-gallons of fuel are used, my LED fuel guage (after market) indicates time to refuel. Would this be related to a bad ignition switch?
On my '04 I once had a brain cramp and turn the ignition switch to the left and tried to start it. It would not turn over. I thought I had a dead battery abnd scratched my head for awhile before realizing what I did. I think the left position is "accessories".
My 2005 SE Fat Boy starts and runs when I accidentally start it by turning the ignition switch to the left. Although it runs fine the tach and speedometer don't work. I forget if the brake lights or signals worked, since it's been about 4 years since I did this.
The first time I did it, I thought I had a short since the gauges weren't working. The 2nd time when I noticed the tach and speedometer weren't working is when I also noticed I had started it by turning the ignition switch to the left.
Another thing I found out by accident was when I use the kill switch to stop the engine and forget to turn the ignition switch off, my alarm doesn't chirp when I set it. I've only done this twice and managed to do it both times on the same day.
I always set my alarm when I park, so this makes for a good reminder to let me know if I forget to turn off the ignition.

Since I just bought my bike, I'm taking it to get checked out tomorrow. I spoke with a service tech today and was told that if it starts with the switch to the left (ACC), it may have been replaced by the previous owner and was not properly installed. Don't know if leaving it alone may lead to other problems. Better safe that sorry.
