FATBOY CHUBBY APES
After weeks of web surfing and picking peoples brains and looking at pix of other fatboys with apes and looking over details of other peoples work. I finally completed my WILDONE W0502 installation. The key to the job is TAKING YOUR TIME, and DOUBLE CHECKING YOURSELF!
You have to remove the tank, I could'nt imagine doing it with it on. As I moved through the stages I took pix of before I took things apart so I had something to reference when it was time to put it back together.

The wiring is the most intense part of the job. I made a wire by wire list that double checked so I knew what wire to connect to what wire. I cut each control harness about 1 1/2" above the handlebar clamps (so the covering would run into the new bars) I extended each wire about 3 feet. 6 wires in each side of the bars. Make a good connection and solder. Then slip a piece of shrink tube over and repeat.
Just make sure you solder and shrinkwrap your joints.
Vaccum a pull string through each side of the bars and have someone help you pull the wires through (this part was easy) Then determine the final length of the wires and make the joints up, mount your controls and move on to the next part of the job. (I hooked up the battery to check my connections at this point) Tuck the harneses back where they belong (reference the pix you took)
Now The clutch cable is easy. I had to remove the upper exhaust pipe. Make sure you get a new gasket and o ring.
The cable lengths I used are: Throttle / Idle 37" Clutch 71" Brake 50"
the throttle / idle was perfect, the clutch could have been about 2" shorter and the brake could have been about an inch or two shorteras well.
I'm sure I missed alot of detail but I hope I shed some light on this popular subject. Just take your time or pay someone to do it if you have the money. It's better if you do it yourself. It's more gratifing when you ride it for the first time.

Good job...I installed myself and it was a great learning experience. How difficult was wiring your lightbar? That may be my next mod, I want to get my turn signals off my bars to give it a more clean look.
I'm not a fan of apes but to each their own. Good job on the installation, way over my ability to do. Not to change the subject but how easy or difficult was it to put those swingarm axle covers on? They are my next purchase and hopefully it's not to much of a chore. I'm not the most mechanically inclined person.

Regards.
I have the black HD axle covers on my 06 Fatboy and did not have to remove the brake caliper. I just loosened the nut on the rear axle, pushed it through enough to get the mounting bracket on the right side, then pushed it back in place. I then replaced the washer on the left side with the thinner one that is supplied with the covers. Put the nut back on, tightened it, then inserted the cotter pin. Mount the covers with the allen screws and your done. Hardest part was getting the nut loosened to begin with.
