Stick with the gear drive so you don't have to worry about the tensioners would be my suggestion. But you're the one who has to live with it.

I'll probably go with a gear drive, if I ever need to replace major parts, and crankshaft runout doesn't prohibit it. These scoots have some top end noise (don't yet understand why), but they seem to run a long time with this noise without problems, so it's probably not worth going to heroic efforts to make it go away.
