For those in NC I asked and 13" is the legal height.
http://home.ama-cycle.org/amaccess/l...t.asp?state=nc

Either the person that told you that is wrong or the American Motorcyclist Association's page is out of date. I'm sure you could dispute it though with that info.
That web site is wrong for AZ: it says maximum of 15" above seat. The law is hands not above shoulders, which is what I was cited for. It's generally not hard to find the laws for your state. Just google "your state statutes" and then look for the statutes related to motor vehicles or traffic. I did that for NC and the AMA site appears to be correct, there is no handlebar law there.

Interesting web site - I was looking through different states at random and the differences in local laws is pretty vast. Some states allow the handlebars to be 30" above the seat while others show only 15" above.

Not sure if we have a height restriction on bars here in KY or not but no one I know has been stopped. My buddy is about to install 20" apes and he has installed 20" apes with a 4" riser on a friends bike. Lots of guys around here have 16" and 18" apes.

I personally have 12.5" Wild1 apes so its not an issue wherever I go. The 12.5" apes are exactly what I wanted and are comfortable as hell.

Plead not gulity and lower the bars the cop may not show up in court and the case dismissed happens here a lot with exhaust they give you a ticket and they have no meter so you plea no gulity and the cop does not show up or they send you back a letter saying dismissed

...a $140 ticket.
Gotta love America.. Whoever the poor sap was that first told you it was a free country was very misinformed. Some politicians voted for you as they know more than all of us that those 16" apes are a plain menace to society and a threat to peaceful subjugation to the almighty government, or at least pose some safety risk as deemed by some less-than-top-of-the-class state engineer.. Therefore, society must be protected by these terrible traffic risking handlebars. Oh don't get me started.

I'm sorry to hear about your ticket.

.. take the power back y'all.

They just arent apes if you arent hanging some but 20's? I need to see a picture of that with someone on them. Sounds kinda overly done and probably not all that great looking.

Man, that's pathetic. I think here in MD the law is not above the shoulders, but I've never heard of it actually being enforced. Any cops that I've talked to couldn't care less about that kind of stuff. I think I'd fight it in court before I changed the bars...

I thought about pleading not guilty and leaving them on, but now that I'm asking around, people are telling me about their friends who have also gotten ticketed. So I'm just going to avoid the hassle and do the 12.5s, which should be right at shoulder level for me. For anyone in Tucson, AZ thinking about putting apes on... it *is* enforced.
