Installed my 16" apes last weekend. Before I ordered them I measured straight up from the forks to see how high my hands would go. Perfect, I thought, even with my shoulders and legal. When I got them adjusted to comfortable, however, I realized I neglected to account for my long arms. Pushing them forward raised them a few inches which made them illegal. Surely, the LEOs wouldn't be worried about that?! Wrong! Second day out I get slapped with a $140 ticket. So off they're coming and I'll be switching to 12.5" apes. Got a whole 50 miles on them. Damn, I really love the 16s too.
Damn that does suck. I live in NC and I hear we may get an anti-ape hanger law here too soon. I was a cop 10 years ago. That is the kind of BS I never wasted my time enforcing.
Please excuse my ignorance about such things, but could you change the risers to compensate? I have 16's on my bike, but I haven't been stopped by anybody and for that matter, I don't even know what legal height is. Just an idea, hope it helps.
What kinda bars are they???? Wild 1???? If your planning on selling them, shoot me a pm with a price......

Either the person that told you that is wrong or the American Motorcyclist Association's page is out of date. I'm sure you could dispute it though with that info.
