Default Hard Starting

Hey Everyone!

I have a 2006 Heritage Softail.

It has always been a little hard to start when it was hot. Never when cold.

Today on a group ride, had to crank it several times to get it to fire. When it did, the check engine light and battery light stayed on a few seconds.

At end of day, after a quick stop, check engine light stayed lit about 5 seconds after it started.

thoughts? Gonna take it in for service soon, but wondering what I am in for?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Got a battery tender? How old is the battery? Checked for loose cables?

Honestly I haven't done anything yet, but it doesn't hesitate to turn over, just doesn't want to fire...so although it might be a battery problem, I am more inclined to think it is an ignition type issue. Will check the cables though. I honestly don't know how old the battery is...I can't imagine its original, but I have owned the bike about 1 1/2 years, and I haven't changed it out yet.

This has been a well known problem on the fuel injected models for several years. I'm not sure if HD has found a cure for this yet or not. When it came to this problem my last bike was worse than my current one.

It seems to be getting worse now. Today is the first time that I have had the check engine and battery light stay on.

Time for fresh plugs! Put in a pair and come back and tell us how much better it runs!

I'm thinking your bike is fine but your battery is on a downhill slide.

the battery is dropping below the ecu shutoff voltage..
very common among fuel injected engines..

check your voltage when cranking ,and when running ..
If the voltage drops below 10.5v while cranking,,sounds like battery time.
that is if your charging 13-14.5v then engine is running

My 09 Deluxe does this, too, which is very concerning at gas stops. The bike only has about 4000 mile on it. I keep it on a battery tender. Only does this after it's hot. The dealer says "Yep, these bikes will do that" Big help they are!!! It's still under warrantee, so next time I need service, I will jack them up about this issue again.
Hope you find a solution... Hope I find a solution, too!!!
