Well, the birthday has been very good to me this year. I got a Primo Brute 5 on order (thanks Grandma). What special tools do I need for the isntall? Never have installed an open primary. What did you use to get the rear starter bolt out without removing the oil tank? I'm not removing that thing again it's far too much hassle.

I knwo I need to lock the primary sprockets (not a big deal).

Thanks guys. Also, powder coat, chrome, anodize or what to the polished aluminum belt drive and cover? The aluminum does not amtch anything on my bike. Maybe teh industrial feel will look cool, I really don't know.

Awesome man. Primo is a great product. Plus it runs anti seize on the tranny splines instead of loctite like my BDL so pulling the unit off is a snap. I think it has to do with the material they use on the clutch basket

Anyway back to your question. For the oil tanks I have always had to loosen them and prop them up as best as possible. This is obviously easier with no oil in them. But you are right it is a mega huge PITA. For pulling/putting the old compensator/new motor pulley I have always used a good jam bar and a big torque wrench/jam bar. You can use an impact but I prefer to do it the manual way so I know it is on right.

Next is the tranny shaft. Now I have never put a belt drive on a twin cam but I am sure they run the same unsealed bearing in the inner primary from the factory. If so you will need to remove the race on the tranny shaft. Either get a puller or do it the redneck dremel way like I did. Also for pulling the basket just put her in high gear and hold the rear brake while you loosen and tighten the tranny nut. Works like a charm.

And the last thing I will say is to check your main seal on the motor. Good chance it could be leaking a little. If it were me I would go ahead and put a new one on with the spring facing IN toward the motor. The seal is designed to keep primary fluid out of the motor so it is best to reverse it. Also clean the holy crap out of the stator and that area with brake cleaner. That area will vibrate and cause leftover leaking from primary fluid for ever making you think it is oil.

Sorry long response but I love belt drives and have put many on bikes. Good luck and of course we need pics. Oh and no answers on changing the color of the motor plate. No real experience there.

Oh and I always mark with a sharpie my motor nut to make sure it has not moved at all. Basically so I can keep an eye on it. I witnessed a buddies BDL pulley come off while I was riding behind him. Vibration can be a bit$%

Thanks for all the answers. It's a done deal, Brute V 3.5" belt. Granny has been good to me this year, which is something new. LOL. My buddy has the race puller so that is not an issue. I had the seal redone about a year ago. It's gonna be a bit here until it arrives and I get a chance to put it on, but I'll do a how to as I always do with everything. I am thinking chroming it would look great, but it will not be inexpensive. I'm gonna have to get this from someone else as another b day gift. Hmmm.

I plan on putting a 3" OBP on my 2012 Blackline. I just have to decide wether I want to run a BDL or a Primo.

I dunno;I can't see that the advantage is worth the tremendous cost of an open unit. Rather put the money into go-fast stuff.
