Peg,

Look at both HD 10 Mini Apes but also take a look at Wildone 12 Inch Chubby Apes.

I have a 06 SB with the 10 Inch Mini Apes and though they were great. When I bought my FB I had a lot done to it and one was to change the factory bars to 12 Inch 1.25 Chubby Apes.

I had inquired about Beach Bar and the tech sold my on the Apes instead.

I was a little worried about the 2 inch height to start. Now after riding the FB some I am really thinking of sending the SB up for the 12 inch bars.....The Mini's just don't look right to me anymore.

I will post some pic's of both so you can see the difference.

Default Apes

Peg, just my two cents, if you are going to apes I would seriously look at the Carlini Apes. I have both the Wild 1 Chubby Apes and Carlini Apes and IMO the Carlini Flying or Gangster Apes would look better. They are classier with the bend and the Carlini plate on the side is very cool. Also have some very cool risers IF you want to add them. Given the upgrades to the bike that you have made so far, what's another 100 or so for the Carlini Apes over the competitors. Check out their website. SJ Ron

Glad you were able to test a variety of bars out and found something to fit and feel comfortable for you. Can't wait to see your bike with the new bars!

Peg,

These are the pic's of 10 inch Mini Apes that come factory on SB's.

12 inch Wild 1 Chubby Apes.

Utah has a law the bars have the shoulder level or less and the 12 inch just make it for me.

The HD tech that does my work has 18' and I don't know how he gets away with them.

I would agree the Carlini bars make a better visual statement.

You might want to look at Drag Spec 2 over Chrome Cow bells instead of those Retro Chrome fork boots. I think the Chrome Fork Boots detract form the over all look you have going on your bike. I am going to have those installed this winter and do away with the SS factory ones that I should have replaced with the Nacelle.

Those SS cow bells can be polished up to look like chrome.

I know there are many factors that will go into what feels best (seat, height, pull-back, etc.) but the mini apes felt the best.
The article that I recommended talks about style preferences vs. what feels right... it is a tradeoff we all have to make if we don't happen to get lucky and find something that both appeals to us and works like it should.

The order of how you make your choices is most important. If you put them out of order, you may get to a point where there is no really good solution... for example, choosing apes first and going from there because that is the look that you want.

How you want to use the bike is the real issue. Show or go? You can rarely have both, if ever.

I think you know what kind of bars you want now so I will only add that you should NOT go with HD bars. They are mostly 1" bars and to my knowledge they are all stainless and not chrome. Although stainless is great for longevity, they don't look chrome and when you have a lot of chrome on your bike that yellow look of stainless bars stands out.

I would call Hill Country and ask them their opinion. They sell all of the big names and make their own as well. I have found that they are more about the customer than the sale.

With your bike I would definitely say that a 1 1/4" bar would be right. Whoever you go with, make sure they know that a stock HD 10" mini ape height is what you are looking for, some handlebar manufacturers claim 12" but they really have a 10 or 11" rise, some claim 10 and then are closer to 12. At least if they know what works for you, they can come up with something comparable.

As for the big bore (103) I would leave it alone if you are not having engine problems now. Once you start adding displacement you have to make up for a larger air intake and exhaust so new cams would be required. You did ask what a cam was before didn't you? In short, they have an elliptical lobe that lifts up on the push rods that open and close your valves. This open duration allows a quantity of fuel/air or exhaust to pass. More volume available by upgrading to a larger piston (103 kit) would require more fuel and air in to produce power and require more spent fuel and air (exhaust) out of the cylinder. So the old cam was enough for the current displacement but would be inadequate for the new. This is of course an over simplification and chances are the bike would run well enough without it but it would not be "right".

Good luck on your choices.

Thanks....... yeah I've decided to forgo the 103 upgrade... I am a moderate rider and don't see the need.

And yes I do not want HD bars... too many other great choices that look better. And yes I do want chrome. I am working with the Chop Shop on the bars, they are going to help me out with all the choices. Good to have someone to trust!
