i recently traded for my '99 night train and , love the bike, but since the time i have got it the speedo hasnt worked . i talked to the previous owner, and he asked me if i had washed the bike? and i said no, and was wondering what the heck washing your bike had to do with the speedo? anybody have any suggestions? everything else seems to work on the bike, except the speedo.
i pulled the dash assy off the tank ,pulled the connectors apart, and reconnected them, no worky, do the sensors go out in the transmission? is this a common problem? i know the bike is 13 years old, and where might be the best source for the sensor? harley or aftermarket?
Instead of using the hit or miss parts upgrade method, I would suggest that you borrow one from a buddy that has a similar model and hook it up and see if it works. If it does, you need a new speedo. If it doesn't, start looking for shorts or lack of continuity. You need a wiring diagram and a test meter and you check to ground and end to end to make sure all the wires are good and only those that are supposed to be grounded are.
I took a slightly different approach and bought one on ebay. I figured I could resell it if that wasn't the problem, but I was pretty sure it was. If it's bad, buy the speedo/tach combo while you're at it. I wish I had but I was short on cash at the time.
