On sport bike tires it is pretty critical how they are stored for slicks for example.
However normal dot street/track tires they are going to sit in a unheated garage alot of times anyway and I've never had an issue.
The compounds on some tires can become hard if improperly stored but I doubt this would affect a normal tire like our m880's.

I called Metzeler again and I had the chance to talk with one of their rep. she didn't give me a clear answer cause everytime I ask her a question she tells me a different answer. 1st she told me we don't have an expire date on our tires and you can use them no matter how long they were sitting on the shelf. she focused on "our tires have warranty since the 1st day of purchase". and when I told her that I'm minding my own safety and not trying to protect my purchase by the warranty she advised me to get the tire inspected by any tires shop or even by the HD dealer. I guess that wasn't a clear answer cause checking a tire can't be done by just looking at it.

I just got new tires online. Both from the 30th to the 40th week of 2011, so very new. I would not be happy if I bought a "new" five-year old tire. While your tire is "unused", it is far from "new."

I burn through 2-3 rears and at least one front per year. I would run 5 yo tires without too much worry.

I read an old report from 2004. Seems tires can break down after 6 years.

http://www.usatoday.com/money/autos/...ire-date_x.htm

I won't put tires older than one year on any vehicle I have. On car/truck tires that can be critical as we drive them lots longer than our Harley tires.

For instance, if you put 3 year old tires on your Harley and they last 1-2 years, you're inside the 6 year window. If you put 3 year old tires on your car and they last 3-4 years ... you could be in trouble.
