Been sick for the last few days but I made some progress on the Fat Boy. Get the new forward controls and kick stand in. Got them installed on the bike. The PO must have had +3 forward controls because the shift rod was way too long. Not being willing to pay the crazy cost for a new shift rod; I took the pieces to work, cut down the length, drilled and tapped the end. Got everything to the needed length and put it all together. Now I have a working shift rod that still has adjustment room for a total cost of $.59. LOL Had to buy a new bolt and nut to connect the shift rod to the forward controls.

Not being convinced that I like the 21" aluminum wheel that came with the bike, I got an OEM Fat Boy solid from a friend of mine. I always liked the fat front tire look and thought it was going to look good on my bike. Swapped it out and I'm not feeling it. I'm letting it set for a day or two and see look at it again. If my initial impression sticks; that solid 16" wheel will be coming back off.

I'll get some pics tonight and get them posted.

Ok, here are 2 pics of the forward controls that I got:

Talked with a guy that owns a local motorcycle repair shop. He worked for Harley for over 25 years. I scored some apes, risers and a set of stretched tanks from him in exchange for doing some work on his Jeep. The tanks were new, but he had them airbrushed by local guys and the tanks were on display in his showroom.

Making some more progress. Picked up an '05 Deuce wheel and tire from a friend of mine. Has the pulley and rotor on it already. From what I have read, the '05 should be the 1 1/8" wide belt where my current one is 1 1/2" wide. Probably still too wide to not have clearance issues.

Tom84FXST has been a huge help in pointing me in the right direction. So far, I have the outer primary cover off. Making a stepped block out of an old cutting board so that I can remove the compensating nut and the clutch basket. From what my manual shows, I can remove the clutch basket whole without having to disassemble it. Once I get the primary chain off, I need to pull the starter jack shaft and starter and then I can remove the inner primary. Once I'm to that point, I can measure for offset and potentially changing to chain final to help with rear tire clearance.

Ok, been a number of months since my last posting. I have had some great successes and a few small setbacks with my bike. However, I didn't want to give up on it and through persistence, I have everything buttoned up and have been riding my bike for the last few days to check for any small quirks or issues.

Keep in mind, I horse traded, ebayed old parts and made what I needed. Really, the only money I laid out was for the tranny sprocket, chain and rear sprocket from Zippers.

Got it all together and had a base gasket leaking on the rear cylinder. Had no idea how to fix that and no money to pay anyone. Me, my FSM and about 5 hours and I had it fixed. To date, no oil leaks from the base gasket.

Again, HUGE thanks to Tom for all of the email help and advice while I was tearing the primary apart for the chain final conversion!!

Here are some pics of the finished (for now) project:

New front Avon 150/80-16 tire. It's a tight fit but nothing rubs and it tracks nicely. Also, sold the front fender and 21" wheel/tire that I got with the bike. Went with an RSD fork brace for now.

Traded a guy for an OEM Cross Bones seat. Turned some grade 8 bolts down for the springs to ride on, made a front tab and bolted it up. Also, you can see the round oil tank/battery box I switched. Managed to figure out a way to mount that without cutting anything off the bike or welding anything else on.

Made a side mount plate/tail light setup.

I had seen where people were selling drilled hand levers for about $65 a set. I really liked the looks, but not the price. LOL. Took mine off and drilled them.

Since I have an inverted wide glide frontend with 58mm tubes, I couldn't find a way to mount my front turn signals. Found this headlight on ebay and wired in the signals. Have gotten a lot of comments on it.

Crazy..........any 07 and up Fatboy will have a 200mm rear tire. Probally know that but they have a different swing arm and on the 07 the front wheel has a little offset so it tracks the rear.

Very cool crazy4ink, respect to you, you've earned it! That brings me back to how we use to build our bikes back in the 70's. Swapping & Scrounging up all used parts from friends, swap meets, independent shops, etc. Nickle & diming them together and knowing every part like the back of your hand. And tapping into every resource we could find to get it all together. Gives you a whole lot more to be proud of as opposed to just tossing your credit card down on the counter with a list of chrome accessories to bolt onto your newly financed Harley.

Kudos to you bud, ride with pride

Thanks a lot everyone! I will admit, there were times I wanted to pull my hair out, but it was worth every bit of it. I think a lot of the fun was the horse trading and bartering. Made a lot of new friends, got parts I needed and helped some others find the parts they needed.
