Default Now or later?

Going solo on a ride around the country- solo
I've done stage 1, and am wondering if I should change the cams now or when I get back.
Will performance cams help with the trip, or just kill my gas mileage and I won't get to really enjoy them until I get back. I just wonder if a better cam will be appreciated when passing and climbing hills.

I think you'll appreciate having some good cams on your trip and if you already have a stage I they don't really do much to gas mileage. Not in my experience, anyway. Have a good trip. I wish I could afford to take that kinda time off...

Get it done before you go. Why put it off,and you will appreciate the added umpff once your gear is loaded.
I am doing a coast to coast run in July. A month off. My old lady is coming for the run to the pacific but she can only get 2 weeks off from work.
So I will be solo riding east. Just me,my thoughts with no real destination, only the journey in front of me.
You are going to love the trip. The freedom, the open road. I am very jealous right now.

How long before you leave on the trip will you have to iron out any issues with tuning and whatnot? If the bike is running fine now you might want to just wait rather then jinx things. It's your decision of course but if you don't have time to put in several hundred shakedown miles with the new setup it might be better just to wait.

Very envious, I hope you take your sweet-*** time. I'm not into jinxes, although a Red Sox fane, but if bike is tip top maybe leave it that way.

I agree with Fatbob. Just in case there are any issues you gotta iron out, & you wanna be close to home when you put on those shakedown miles.

Cams won't hurt mileage too bad, and you'll appreciate them in the mountains. On the other hand, you don't want to be breakin the new mods in on a trip like that, so if you can't get a few hundred in before the trip, then prob wait.

And you'll love it. Did a coast to coast a couple years ago, solo as well, and loved every second of it. 21 days 7500 miles all with a huge grin on my face. One word of advice, do NOT underestimate the mountain thunderstorms. They make these East Coast storms look like drizzle! They WILL kick your ***!

Couple cool spots:

- The Pig Trail near Eureka Springs Arkansas
- The 550 loop in the Durango CO area
- Moab
- any ride in the rockies.
- any ride in the desert.

There is so much to see, cant see it all in ten trips, let alone 1. Itchin to do another one now! Good luck, and enjoy!

I would tend to do them first before you leave, but do try to put some miles on it before you leave. Sounds like the trip of a lifetime, enjoy and be safe

I am with Fatbob and Dickey. If it's running good now, just roll with it. You won't miss what you've never had. I've ridden 2-up all through the west on a stock bike, you have plenty of bike and power won't be an issue. You are allowed to downshift if necessary. It's not a race, enjoy the ride.

The added torque will definitely be appreciated in the mountins, especially with the gear load on. Enjoy it for all of us!
