Default Dumb question of the week...

Ok, so after a year of not being able to get the wife to ride anywhere on the Fatboy, I finally decided to take the passenger pillion off. That went fine, but now I'm looking at what appears to be a protective film covering the rear fender where the seat was. Not horrible looking but not the look I'd be going for on the best bike I've ever owned. Questions: Does it come off? If so, best method. Also, if removed, does damage (scratches etc) occur when I reinstall the seat and someone sits on it?? Thank folks! Merry Christmas or the holiday of your choice!!!

I've heard that it should peel right off with no problems. If not, try putting a little heat on it, like from a hair dryer.

Peels right off like a sticker once you get it started, but if I were planning on putting the seat back on at some point I would check into a tail section. They are made for just those reasons. They hide the clear sticker and all when you have your solo seat on.

Check them out

smitty is right it should come off with a little heat if necessary. Its there to protect the paint from anything getting under the seat and scratching the paint up. But you can get another from the dealer if you ever need to replace it, they are not expensive.
The only problem is that theyare a one shot deal so if your looking for something as just a temporary replacement you coulduseclear 3M carton packing tape instead.
The reason that Isay use the 3M brand is because its thicker andbetter quality than the cheap stuff. Itshould work as well as theoriginal stuff. Its evenavalable in many grocery stores so you ususally don't have to look far to find some. If not try Home Depot or Lowes, one of them should have some.

Definitely not a dumb question, wish id have asked it...
I got mine off very easily, no heat. But shortly after, when i did put the rear seat on it rubbed the fender pretty good and since have had it re painted in that area.... i go back and forth a lot (passenger, solo) and just went to the dealer and got several of those stickers but i go back and forth so much its not worth the sticker trouble, so i deal with it. In my experience no sticker and rear seat = messed up paint on rear fender no doubt.

3M makes that peal and stick protective sheeting.
Google it.

It pealed of the fender of my 07springer classic without any trouble. I too dumped the pilion seat for a black fender rack.

Thanks folks! I'll try giving it a peal to add to the "appeal" right after I pick up some clear 3M packing tape! Happy holidays and Merry Christmas to you all.

Interesting topic guys..

So I googled.. Here's what I found:

3M Scotchcal Film Installation Kit:
http://www.autosupermart.com/store/shop/3m84854.html
Film itself:
http://www.autosupermart.com/store/shop/3m84853.html

And here's a site where a guy is using it to protect the tank on his Road Star..
http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/26/94/

I was too late, the fender got scratched up a long time ago.. I just live with it.. I'll probably make some decision to either install the rear seat or not, but if I do, I'll use this stuff. As it looks, the rear seat is only beneficial to me as a place to rest the sissybar bag, because the wife ain't ridin'.. So I'm flying solo with a nice brand new Mustang Wide Vintage rear seat, wasting space.

Makes me wanna sell the stupid thing so I can roll it over into apehanger parts.

FWIW, I don't think packing tape is the answer. The glue is designed to stay put, not to release. You may wind up doing more damage to your paint trying to remove this material. The film that Drifter4 suggested and Babs researched looks like a good solution. If you need a quick fix, I'd try using painters tape instead of packing tape. Painters tape is designed with a glue that easily releases. I think the white 3M painters tape (as opposed to the blue) has a "soft release" glue for sensitive areas where you want to be especially careful about pealing paint off with the tape. If the painters tape doesn't appear heavy enough to keep the metal seat pan from wearing through it, you could always put a layer of the packing tape over the painters tape for added protection. That way, you'll still have the easy release glue against the paint and it should peal away easily when you want to switch back to the solo setup. That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Merry Christmas, everybody. Have fun, ride safe, and stay warm!
