Need help from you do it yourselfers please.
1. Front bolt (under the front of the tank pushed through the tabs on the front bottom of each side of the tank)
2. Rear bolt (under the front lip of the seat; recommend taking seat off completely)
3. Fuel line crossover (just take it completely off; maybe replace it with a stainless, braided one
) 4. Fuel level sensor (not really holding the tank on, but needs to be removed)
That should be it. There is a rubber "boot" under the front of the tank that protects the wires underneath it and this may be causing grip or friction between the tank and the frame; just wiggle the tank around and constantly pull up on the tank, after you have the above items removed, and it should slowly slide off. There may be a chance that since you layed it down, the tank may be pinching the frame more than normal; just be patient with it and wiggle the tank off. Move it side to side, front to back while consistently putting pressure in the upward direction to get it off. Once you get it off, everything else, while time consuming and maybe confusing if you do not have a service manual, is quite easy if you go step by step and take your time.
This is my first bike I have ever had and I have done every bit of service and mods myself. The apes were the most time consuming part, but I had my trusty service manual at my side and it helped tremendously. As others have said, just be patient and go step by step; go from one end to the other. Start at the controls, remove them from the bars, then go down to the connectors below the tank and disconnect them, then slowly pull the wires out of the bars from the top while holding onto the controls. There is a chance the connectors will want to hang up at the bottom hole in the bars, but just use your fingers to maneuver it and push it through, keeping care not to force it and cut any of the wires. Once through, keep pulling on the wires until the connector is at the top hole; again, it may hang up there, but just maneuver it around and it should come out. I would recommend starting with the side with the smaller connector (left hand controls, if I remember correctly).
There is a chance I just typed up a bunch of stuff that you already know and it will not help you, but in the off chance it will, good luck. It is all fairly simple and with some patience it should work out.
