I have never done it myself but have seen it done,my indy always uses the screaming eagle pins.,the pins are $35 from harley.i dont know if you are going with gear cams if not you might as well change your cam tensioner shoes to the newer ones or upgrade to the se camplate with hydraulic tensioners, kind of pricy, thank god mine was upgraded when i bought it..its a long job ,and the right tools are a must but you will save $500 in labor,,good luck
What would be cool is that a couple of DIYers get a few sets of tools and pass them around for a few bucks. Online DIY tool rental. Deposit plus rental, deposit goes back into your Paypal... wish I wasn't spending all my spare change on my Harley or I would do it! <grin>
The cam install was easy, I replaced the inner bearings but I bought the Jims bearing remover and installer..
For the oil pump, I just loosened the bolts a little.. arranged the flats on the inside to match the crank.. then wiggled the cam plate back on carefully.. after that, tighten the oil pump bolts.
Your correct about the conversion kit. However it is highly recomended you change your inner cam bearings to torringintons. For that you need the remover/installer. Alot of indies will rent you them for $20 or so + deposit. I domt think hd makes a quick install pushrod, so you will have to go in from the top, or like you said, the tappet blocks.
Thanx everyone lots of good info here. I will get the puller and installer from Georges tools and the torringtons. I have the oil pump pins on the way with the conversion kit and cams. My pushrods came in already and according to instructions they go right in without removal of tappet clocks or rocker boxes. They are the straight not tapered adj pushrod. Part number 17997-99a, just waiting for the rest of the stuff now.
The cam install was easy, I replaced the inner bearings but I bought the Jims bearing remover and installer.....
I have been looking at T/C inner bearing removal and installation tools, and JIMs tools are so much more expensive ($195+$159). I checked Ebay and there are two vendors selling both the installation and removal tool as one kit for around $109 plus shipping. Is the JIMs better or more precise or more accurate? I just can't figure out why such a big price differential? Anyone know??
