Hey all im getting ready to do a camplate upgrade and cam install. Its my first time so im doing as much research as possible. Got the andrews conversion kit with 26ns coming. Also have the regular adj. pushrods from screamin eagle . The 2 things im not 100 % sure on is how you get the pushrod covers off and if i reuse that ring at the top of the lower cover . The other is the best way to align the oil pump, Ive read a bunch that say use the pins , dont use the pins just spin the wheel while tightening bolts??? And some say do both like the manual says. Any and all advice is needed like I said this is my first time . Ive watched that cam video about 5 times already he doesnt mention the oil pump alignment. Im confident between the manual and you guys I can pull this off. Thanx Charlie forgot to mention engine size Stock twincam 88

Reason: engine size
Put a flathead under the top clip. Pull down on the short fat one and pop. Turn the test tie in 5th while tightening the bolts (make sure you have the pump seated prior). Are you planning on pulling the rocker boxes for the push rods? Normal adjustables you have too.
Those alignment dowels aren't expensive... and they are a LOT cheaper than having an oil pump fail. I used them when I did mine.
I wouldn't do the work without a manual, personally. And besides having the manual, I wouldn't do it without the right tools for pulling and pressing the bearings. Sure, it can be done... but I don't think it's worth the extra risk.
Replace your inner cam bearings with Torrington bearings.
If you have a lot of miles, you will probably want to replace the lifters, also. Soak the new ones overnight.
Use assembly lube instead of oil on the cam and lifters.
Make sure you use the right spacers when you put in the new gears (not sure what the ns cams use...).
Torque the bolts correctly and in the right order.
Some worry about turning the lifters per the manual, others don't. They have a weep and the manual states where they should go.
It is easier if you have someone to turn the rear wheel in 5th gear while you check to see that the TDC and BDC are correct.
I did this myself couple weeks ago. 1st time for me too. Took bout 4 hours. I used pins and spun the wheel for aligning the pump. Make sure you use all new o-rings, the kit I got didn't have them all. I suggest getting pushrod tubes for adjustable rods, I didn't and wish I had. Once you start takin it apart, you'll see what you're doin and it pretty much falls apart. Relax and take your time, not as bad as it seems. You'll need a press to install the cams in the new plate. The whole thing is really a pretty straight forward operation. And get the cam gear lock tool from H-D-worth every penny. Good luck!
Thanks all im writing this stuff down. About the pushrods the ones I have are from screamen eagle They are not the tappered ones so i dont know if they slip right in or if I have to take off tappet blocks. And i didnt think i needed to press cams in on the andrews kit. I thought they slide right in since the camplate is the upgraded one with the hyd. lifters. Charlie
Your correct about the conversion kit. However it is highly recomended you change your inner cam bearings to torringintons. For that you need the remover/installer. Alot of indies will rent you them for $20 or so + deposit. I domt think hd makes a quick install pushrod, so you will have to go in from the top, or like you said, the tappet blocks.
