I had this happen to me last week too! Six years and no problems, now this. I recently ditched the thermometer dipstick because it hardened up and wouldn't stay tight. This was the stocker that blew out and it fits real snug. I asked the dealer today and got a shrug from the service manager.

Mine blew out when I was idling down an off ramp at about 15 mph. Maybe I have a vent tube that's plugged. That's all I can think of. There isn't supposed to be any pressure in the oil tank.

Crank case vent clogged? Just learning about Harley's but my best mechanics guess being that it was fine after it popped that action released the initial start-up low end pressures and any further build up when warm would blow-by....

Yes! My old 77 XLCH would do that exactly - it was a plugged PVC [?] valve - on the 77 it was right bellow the generator on the cam cover.
I think on newer models it vents to the air box , and I think, why you shouldn't overfill the oil tank.
Look for a clogged valve/hose for the crankcase and clean or replace.

That is a lot of blowby to get the thing to get the dipstick blown out. Are you sure you had it screwed in correctly?

I have replaced 2 dipsticks in 6 years. Yes, there is pressure in the oil tank and the rubber seals on mine went bad. Would shoot it out on a cold start up.

Your dipstick should NOT blow out IMHO.

Again, I agree but they do and it is a mistery to almost all. If anyone cracks the big secret please post. I, like almost everyone in here, has a ton of money in our motor's and I don't want to lose that over dumb chit like that. Also again, if you have an ACE hardware or TRUE value around, they carry all kinds of different size rubber O-rings, at least my ACE does. It has not popped out since adding one. You have to be careful it does NOT roll off though when removing your dipstick. Pull on it slowly until the O-ring is exposed then hold it with your fingertip as you pull the dipstick out the rest of the way. I know this is not the answer to that problem but it works until I or we all get it figured out.

Had this happen once. Just could not keep the dipstick in. It would blow 8 or 9 feet in the air at idle...after pounding my head I found it to be dirt dobbers had build a nest in My ccv vents. Those of you from the south know dirt dobbers are wasp like insects that build the craziest of nests with mud in tiny places. Hate them sobs.....now my scoot resides in an enclosed shop.

Lots of mixed ideas here. I will look at the vent this evening. Ironic though I just put a sundowner seat on and it doesn't cover it like the stock seat. If the vent is clear guess it will have a compression check done. Thanks for your ideas. I will let you know when I get to the bottom of it. Ride hard!

Default Too much oil.

Simple fix - adjust your oil level so that it reads half way between the ADD and FULL indicator on the dipstick -WHEN IT IS HOT. Don't over think it. It's an easy fix. All dry sump engines exhibit the same behavior when too much oil is in the tank. Overfilling the oil tank in a dry sump engine will ruin the engine every time.
